The BEng (Hons) Engineering degree prepares multidisciplinary engineers for an exciting career in computational design and analysis.
Who is it for?
City's broad BEng (Hons) Engineering course is ideal for students with a strong grounding in Mathematics and Science who wish to develop their capabilities in logic and problem-solving. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree course means a wide variety of career paths will be available to graduates.
This course is also available as a four-year integrated Masters - MEng (Hons) Engineering - or as a five-year integrated Masters including a professional placement.
This new degree responds to the demand for engineers enthused by tackling cross-disciplinary challenges, in particular through the development of advanced engineering software (using high-performance computers) and use of digital manufacturing.
The continual growth in computer speed, storage capabilities and visualization techniques, together with greater levels of understanding of the physics that explains our world, has led to remarkable improvements in the fidelity of engineering simulations.
Our current engineering degrees are all accredited by the relevant professional institutions, providing a path for graduates to gain Chartered Engineer status. We have every expectation that this new degree will similarly receive full institutional accreditation.

How to apply
Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.
You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.
Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.
UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.
You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.
When to apply
Your application for entry in September 2018 should arrive at UCAS between September 2017 and 15th January 2018. Applications that arrive after 15th January 2018 will be considered only at City's discretion.
When your application is acknowledged by UCAS, you will be sent a personal identification number so that you can access your records via Track on the UCAS website.

Teaching and learning
The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, group design exercises, laboratory classes and programming workshops. Learning involves a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study. Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study. The design exercises provide the opportunity for you to be engaged in cross-disciplinary challenges, preparing the way for tackling larger problems which span traditional engineering boundaries.
Assessment is by coursework and examinations. Group learning and communication skills are addressed through design studies and presentations. Practical and technical skills are assessed through laboratory work, data analysis and project reports.
Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.

This degree takes in a broad range of engineering topics, including mechatronics, data analysis, solid and fluid mechanics and computational analysis.

The BEng Honours Programme is a three-year full time degree comprising 360 credits (3600 study hours) structured as three Programme Stages, each typically delivered over 22 contact weeks, 4 examination weeks, 4 reflective learning (private study) weeks and 8 vacation weeks (which may be used for private study) per academic year. A BEng (Hons) Programme therefore requires a commitment of 40 study hours per week during the academic year.

Numerate engineering graduates who exhibit strong logical skills, curiosity and an ability to perform at the highest technical level are much sought after by industry. This broad engineering degree will develop your capabilities in not just problem-solving, but problem-seeking. Graduates will have the potential to work within interdisciplinary teams on a wide range of advanced engineering technologies spanning from the design of space probes or aeroengines, F1 aerodynamics, oil and gas recovery, to tether-free walking robots and the design of artificial human heart valves.

* The tuition fee for UK and EU students is determined by the UK Government and was £9,250 for the first year of study at City in 2017/18. The tuition fee for students commencing their studies in 2018/19 has not yet been confirmed: we will update these pages as soon as we receive confirmation. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government's Office for Budget Responsibility. However, this is subject to confirmation. The index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. If fees do increase in each subsequent year of study, we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited by the All Items Retail Prices Index.
** The tuition fee for Non-UK/non-EU students is £16,830 for the first year of study in 2018/19. Each subsequent year of study may be subject to annual increase, as detailed above for UK and EU students, but this is also subject to confirmation.

Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics courses benefit from recently redeveloped facilities with modern teaching lecture theatres equipped with the latest interactive AV systems and modern IT laboratories which are updated annually.

Wind Turbine Design Challenge at City
The week long competition was set up for teams of undergraduate mechanical and aeronautics engineering students to design, construct and test a small wind turbine with pasta tower, plastic pipe blades and gears with metal raw material for lifting a 2,5kg weight.
