About Legal Practice at City, University of London

Strengthen your knowledge and skills in legal practice through in-depth research on a topic of your choice.

Who is it for?

This course is for students who have completed their LPC at The City Law School, are looking to enhance their CVs, and demonstrate commitment to legal practice.


After finishing the LPC at City, through the LLM programme, students can demonstrate their commitment to a specific area of legal practice by completing research and a dissertation. The course aims to strengthen students' CV and enhance employability.

Students will develop a dissertation proposal, and subject to acceptance, carry out research and writing with the support of an experienced supervisor from within The City Law School.

Choice of topic is entirely down to the student, although LPC tutors can provide guidance on this.  Previous topics have included:

  • The case for medical negligence tribunals
  • Company directors' statutory duties
  • Insider dealing and
  • Pre-nuptial contracts
  • Sharia law.

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

Applications for this LLM conversion course may only be made by students who registered on the full LPC with The City Law School within the last five years. It is not possible to apply for the LLM conversion before registering for your LPC, but we provide places for all students who put forward dissertation proposals of a sufficient quality.

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City courses on a part-time basis.

You can only apply for the LLM in Legal Practice if you undertook the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at The City Law School within the last five years.

Before you submit your application, please take time to develop your proposal.  Each section of the form is marked, and you must pay sufficient attention to your title, coverage and methodology in particular. For more information about choosing and completing your dissertation proposal, please see Content and Structure.

Your dissertation proposal should be:

  • Related to the knowledge and skills required for legal professional practice in England and Wales.
  • Broadly related to the areas covered in the LPC
  • Based on the law of England and Wales (though it may include some comparison with another jurisdiction as a minor element).

You are strongly advised to submit your application prior to the closing date. Your application may be rejected if it is not complete, or we cannot find a supervisor for the title that you have proposed.

Early submission gives you a chance to resubmit if your proposal is rejected. Please ensure you have fully completed the from and given the information required.

Academic facilities
