How are these costs calculated?

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.You will be provided with a laboratory coat and safety glasses on commencement of your programme. If you lose or damage these, replacement is your responsibility.

This course is undergoing a review over the next year which may mean a change to the course title and units of study.

This course aims to develop your understanding of biological principles relating to the function of the human body and the characteristics and diagnosis of disease leading to possible therapeutic interventions. You will gain a solid grounding in the principles of biomedical science prior to studying more specialist and advanced topics.

Typical areas of study include biomolecules, cells and microorganisms, systems physiology, biochemistry, medical microbiology, haematology and transfusion, histopathology and cytology, immunology and immune disorders, genetics and integrated pathology.

Your studies will benefit from new laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and our links with local hospitals with whom we work closely. This course is particularly relevant to biomedical science practice and an ideal qualification if you are seeking a career in this area.

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).

This course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.

UCAS Tariff points/Grades required

104-112

104-112 UCAS Tariff Points at A2 (Grades BCC-BBC) including a minimum grade C at A2 in Biology (must include a Pass in the Biology practical assessment), Human Biology or Grade C at A2 in Applied Science. Other Sciences may be considered. General Studies is not accepted. 

BTEC Diploma at Level 3 (Grades D*D) Extended Diploma at Level 3 (Grades DMM) in relevant subject to include 60 credits at Merit from relevant Science units.

Specific GCSE requirements

GCSE grade C or grade 4 in English Language, Science and Mathematics. Level 2 Functional Skills English also accepted.

Non Tariffed Qualifications

Pass Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject (Science/ Medicine/ Dentistry/ Pharmacy) with a minimum 106 UCAS tariff points.

International Baccalaureate points

26 Diploma points with HL Biology at grade 5.

IELTS score required for international students

6.0 with no element below 5.5
