Additional Costs

Specialist Costs

How are these costs calculated?

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing.

Placement Costs

How are these costs calculated?

Costs vary hugely between countries, areas and even between universities within the same country so it is very important to research costs well ahead of time and budget accurately for programmes with a year abroad. You will have to budget for travel, accommodation, living costs and insurance.

Department

Department of Psychology

Psychology is a fascinating, multi-disciplinary subject covering all aspects of human behaviour. It is concerned with individual psychological processes and the social context of how we think and interact with the world around us. Psychologists use scientific methods, such as observation, experiments and statistical analysis to explore all aspects of our behaviour to understand how and why we react in the ways that we do.

Our degree programmes cover all elements of psychological study from early childhood, neuropsychology and forensic to counselling, psychotherapy and abnormal psychology. We will provide you with a thorough grounding across a range of specialist areas and interests ensuring that our graduates are highly employable in a variety of sectors. Upon successful completion of the degree and provided that you graduate with a minimum of a second-class honours classification and pass your Year 3 dissertation research project, you will be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) from the British Psychological Society (BPS). This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Our department offers one of the most diverse psychology teaching curricula in the UK, covering the full spectrum including: cognitive psychology; critical, health and community psychology and both quantitative and qualitative methods. We have built a reputation for delivering challenging and rewarding programmes which have attracted many international students. Departmental staff include practising researchers, counsellors, forensic and community psychologists who all draw on their own expertise to inform their teaching and research.

Academic staff in the department are actively involved in research which informs and directs what you will be taught. This research is supported by a thriving external speaker programme and large numbers of postgraduate students.

This five year programme offers the opportunity not only to study a thorough and detailed knowledge of Psychology and its application but also to study for one year at a partner institution in Australia or the U.S and gain an international overview of how Psychology is studied and applied in an international context.

This is a 5 year not a 3 year course.

Your career prospects after the course

Provided you graduate from your Psychology course at MMU with a minimum of a 2:2 honours classification and you pass your dissertation research project you will be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) from the BPS; this is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Our recent graduates have gained employment in the teaching, banking, financial, education, healthcare, charity, local authority and retail sectors.
