This award offers Masters accreditation for those already working as mentors and coaches (or in related roles) in schools, colleges and the wider workplace.

The focus on practice enables participants to develop their understanding of mentoring and coaching roles and relationships in their professional context, with reference to a range of theoretical models and wider, critical reading.  The award provides the opportunity to explore the many ways in which coaching and mentoring approaches are used in the workplace and to consider the functions and purposes of these approaches and the impact on coaches, mentors and their organisations.

Participants will develop relevant skills through workshop sessions, academic reading and discussion, leading to the application and evaluation of new ideas in practice and planning for further professional development.

Participants' work throughout the award is underpinned by critical reflection, which maintains a clear focus on the immediate workplace context and the coaching and mentoring relationships at the heart of what they do, as well as the wider professional arena in which they work.

This award is part of the Manchester Met Faculty of Education postgraduate Professional Development Programme.

Career options after the course

MA Coaching and Mentoring demonstrates to employers a level of intellectual rigour and thinking at the forefront of coaching and mentoring practice embedded within education and wider professional settings.  It also demonstrates a capacity for sustained and systematic engagement with the theory and concepts underpinning such practice. The course places students' continued professional development at its core and, as such, offers channels to support students' (and organisations) current priorities and targets in coaching and mentoring. Further, the course encourages students to apply new thinking in practice in systematic and innovative/creative ways, with competence and impetus. In this way, students are able to build their reputations as systematic, evidence-driven innovators. These are all good foundations for potential promotions and progressions in professional contexts.

MA Coaching and Mentoring is also a good option for practitioners to develop more critical and theoretical insights about practice. If you are considering continuing with your studies on completion of your Masters by pursuing a research degree (MPhil, EdD or PhD) then you will find MA Coaching and Mentoring a good foundation.
