About Exercise, Nutrition and Health at The School of Science and Technology, Nottingham Trent University

Public health, exercise and nutrition practitioners designed this course in collaboration with our academics. This makes the course ideal for those who are interested in the factors that influence our health. You will concentrate on the roles of physical activity, exercise and nutrition in the prevention and management of disease. Crucial topics, such as the public health system and communication skills, are also integrated into this course.

This exercise, nutrition and health degree aims to provide you with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes to allow you to improve the health of individuals, groups, communities and populations using:

  • exercise
  • physical activity
  • nutrition
  • healthy eating.

You'll learn the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition science and how they relate to health and disease. Alongside this, we will ensure that you can apply this knowledge in a public health setting so you will learn about:

  • the UK public health system
  • the strategies in place to promote health using exercise
  • physical activity and nutrition
  • how to monitor and evaluate these.

You will have the opportunity to gain industry recognised additional qualifications in:

  • exercise referral
  • food hygiene
  • Cook and Eat session delivery.

What you'll study

The course has been developed with input from health professionals to ensure you have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to enhance your job prospects. You will have numerous opportunities to practice what you have learned including:

  • dietary and exercise assessment sessions with volunteers (supported by your tutors)
  • designing and delivering healthy eating sessions
  • working in the community to increase physical activity levels
  • practising your communication skills.

  • Year One

    Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology

    This module provides the foundations of the key human systems (both anatomical and physiological) and their responses and adaptations to sport and exercise.

    Foundations in Sport and Exercise Psychology

    Examine the psychological consequences of engaging in sport and exercise, as well as the mental factors that impact on quality sport and exercise experiences.

    Food and Healthy Eating

    You will study food microbiology and food hygiene and the factors affecting the growth of foodborne microorganisms, food poisoning and recommendations to ensure high standards of food hygiene.

    Principles of Training

    This module provides essential information for working effectively and safely with the general population as well as special populations in a gym environment.

    Foundation Nutrition

    Learn the essential principles and concepts of nutrition, focussing upon the structure and function of nutrients, the effects of consumption and the methods for assessing nutritional intake and status.

    Introduction to Research

    Get an overall perspective of the research process in the context of sport, exercise, health and leisure management, and learn the research skills necessary to successfully complete your studies.
  • Year Two

    Applied Nutrition

    This provides an opportunity to apply your knowledge of nutrition to a range of different circumstances across the lifespan.

    Lifespan Active Health

    You will study the effects of physical activity across the lifespan and the role of a physically active lifestyle in the prevention and management of a number of hypokinetic conditions.

    Nutrition and Metabolism

    Develop an understanding of nutrient metabolism and regulation, and through the use of case studies apply nutritional and healthy eating knowledge to the development of dietary recommendations.

    Research Design and Analysis

    Using enquiry based learning, students will continue to learn about the research process and gain an understanding and experience of how research is conducted within the field of exercise, nutrition and health.

    Choose one module from:

    Training Principles to Practice

    You will have the opportunity to gain the industry recognised Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) Level 3 in Exercise Referral.

    Professional Practice

    Through a short placement you will learn to apply, analyse and evaluate a range of vocationally relevant processes to enhance
    your employability and prepare you for the world of work.

    Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology

    This module outlines, both theoretically and practically, how the body's structures and functions are altered by bouts of physical exercise, and how these concepts can be applied to training in order to enhance exercise tolerance and sport performance.

    Practical Applications in Sport and Exercise Psychology

    In this module, students develop the principles from Foundations in Sport and Exercise Psychology and relate them to sport, coaching, management and exercise contexts.

  • Year Three

    You have the option to undertake a one year work placements in industry. On successful completion you will gain an additional award - the Placement Diploma in Professional Practice.

  • Final year

    Aetiology and Management of Disease

    Starting with a review of the research techniques involved, emphasis is placed on the aetiological roles of physical activity / exercise and nutrition and how they are used to manage disease.

    Health Principles to Practice

    This module enables the acquisition of effective health practitioner skills through a series of case studies that include exercise, physical activity and nutrition.

    Sport Project and Dissertation

    You will produce an original and independent piece of work in a specialist area of sport science, coaching, exercise science or sport and leisure management depending on your focus of study.

    Choose one module from:

    Strength, Power and Endurance for Sport and Exercise

    The module typically focuses on six topics related to applied exercise physiology and strength and conditioning research.

    Applied Health Promotion

    Students will develop the health promotion skills and knowledge gained in the Level 2 module, Health and Lifestyle, and apply them to a real-life setting by developing, researching, delivering and evaluating a novel health promotion campaign.

    Choose one further module from:

    Advanced Topics in Sport and Exercise Psychology

    Students will become familiar with selected areas such as motivational climate, athletic identity, mental toughness, psychology of injury and morality in sport and the emphasis of this module will be placed on current primary research.


    Focuses on the key elements of entrepreneurship which are essential for business start-ups. You will develop your knowledge of key theories and techniques associated with creativity and innovation.

    Sport and Exercise Nutrition

    This module aims to provide the fundamental knowledge and understanding, that underpin the relationship between nutrition and exercise performance.

    Child and Adolescent Growth, Health and Performance

    This module will describe and critically evaluate the processes of growth and development in humans, and the potential impact of these on the current (and future) health and performance of the growing child and adolescent.

Your career development

The number of people with physical inactivity and poor nutrition is rising. This means that the roles of the following are gaining an increasingly high profile:

The number of jobs in health related industries is also increasing.

Excellent placement opportunities

You will have the option to undertake a year's work placement in industry. You will be visited and supported by your University tutor, and will be assigned a vocational training officer within your placement organisation. Successful completion of the year, along with the associated assessments (placement diary, placement report, and oral presentation), will result in the award of a Placement Diploma in Professional Practice.
