Biomedical engineering is a very diverse field which is also developing rapidly. To help you to become a bioengineer of the future, we work closely with industry to ensure you are as well-prepared as possible for a career in this exciting and rewarding industry.
Our Biomedical Engineering courses are highly practical and use real examples and projects from industry and medicine. On this course you'll look at current health issues and develop materials, processes and devices that help prevent or treat disease or rehabilitate patients.
Areas of bioengineering covered on this course are biomaterials, bioinstrumentation, biomechanics, medical imaging,rehabilitation, and cellular, tissue, and genetic engineering.

As is normal practice for new engineering courses, the University will seek accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for our programmes when they have students in the final year (2019/20). This accreditation will ensure the content of our courses matches the IET benchmark awarded to high-quality programmes that provide ideal preparation for aspiring professional engineers. The accreditation, if granted, will be backdated to include the first intake years.

Where will I study?
Due to the highly applied nature of these courses, the majority of your time will be spent in two purpose designed and built facilities on Clifton Campus: the Engineering Research and Teaching building, and the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Engagement Centre (ISTEC). In these facilities, you will take your practical and workshop sessions. The lectures and seminars will take place in our new Teaching and Learning building.
Learn a new language

Each year you'll take a combination of core modules to give you a solid grounding in engineering, specialist modules where you'll gain the specific skills needed for your particular subject area, and practical and project modules where you'll work on a task or project set by industry. Engineering Science Fundamentals
Study the aspects of materials, from a macroscopic perspective, including their key properties, and develop the core knowledge and skills that are essential to engineers and to engineering.
Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing
This module will equip you with the relevant mathematical and computational skills for analysis and design that underpin many areas of engineering. These core mathematical skills will inform the discipline specific mathematics and computing skills you will use in the design, manufacture of testing of engineered products in the coming years.
Laboratory Analysis and Product Case Studies
Through the use of mini product case studies, explore materials science, design and manufacture processes and mathematical methods to understand why products are made the way they are.
Practical and Project Skills for Engineering
Learn the physical and IT workshop skills required in the design and manufacture of products, including basic design methods and fabrication.
Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics
This module will introduce you to basic methods for data collection and numerical techniques for analysing data to answer simple research questions in anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.
Chemistry of Materials
Learn how Biomedical engineers use their knowledge of science and mathematics to help solve health problems. You will be equipped with the fundamental knowledge necessary to understand

"I had been working in an NHS Haematology/Transfusion laboratory for three years when I came across the flexible Biosciences course at NTU.
I first heard about this degree through the IBMS website. I was looking for an accredited long distance course and found this was my favourite because of the specialised syllabus and the ability to carry out the modules at my own pace whatever time of day.
I read about the bursary award for this course on the NTU website. The bursary application was really straightforward and easy to complete. I had to explain my reasons for applying and how I was suitable for the bursary.
Without financial assistance I believe that I would have found it very difficult to complete this course over the two years and would perhaps have had to prolong my study to be able to manage the payments. Being awarded the bursary was a huge privilege and it has allowed me to concentrate on the course content instead of worrying about finding the next payment, for which I am extremely grateful.
The course is highly specific to my line of work and attendance will benefit the department by producing a more knowledgeable and experienced member of staff. This will improve both the quality of service and patient experience as well as ensuring my continuous professional development within the NHS.
My undergraduate research project was concerned with stem cells and the amount of apoptosis that occurs with overnight storage at 4◦C. This has encouraged me to read around the subject of stem cells and I believe these amazing cells have yet to be fully understood. I hope that my postgraduate research project will also give me passion for another subject area.
Science is forever changing and the structure of scientists within the NHS is under development in accordance with modernising scientific careers. "After looking around the university on an open day I was amazed by the quality of the equipment throughout the university on Clifton.
The BSc (Hons) Exercise, Nutrition and Health degree course allows students to understand up to date, relevant sports science data in a hands-on job related environment with the most up to date equipment. I liked the fact that each course module was different, keeping each subject interesting, but with elements that allowed learning to overlap.
After finishing my undergraduate course I started looking for Masters Courses. I could not find a university with the same facilities and equipment that would help me achieve in the areas of sports science. Through my academic career I have developed the ability to apply scientific principles in the design, data collection and write up of nutrition/ physiology research projects.
All of my lecturers over my four years at Nottingham Trent University helped me with my studies, from drop in sessions, labs and lectures. They also helped me to achieve one publication and funding from the European Hydration Institute to begin research on another.
Nottingham is a busy city, which is easy to get to and cheap when living as a student and after student life. I am now working for Nottingham Trent University as a Laboratory Technician in CELS.
During my social time I am also continuing to research within the areas of sports science and nutrition with the help from fellow lecturers to add more published research to my CV.
