About Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University

This creative course mixes design and theory, and focuses on the visual communication of brand, product and service in the global fashion industry; how the message and image of the fashion brand or product is best communicated to the consumer.

You'll develop visual communication skills across a broad range of creative mixed media, including photography and styling, art direction and graphics, print and digital design, film and interactive, and 3D and retail design. You'll learn to apply these to areas of the industry such as fashion media, branding, advertising, print, visual merchandising, retail environments, events and PR, and trend prediction and forecasting.

Combining your theoretical understanding of the relationships between design codes, brand narratives and communication, you'll learn how to generate great ideas that stand up to be tested in a business context.

Although this is a creative course, you don't need to have a background in art, design or fashion, or a creative portfolio.

How you're taught

You will be taught through a variety of teaching and learning experiences which will include:

Assessment for this course is 100% through coursework. You will be assessed at the end of each module and awarded
a grade. You will receive feedback throughout. Depending on the module, you may be assessed through:

  • illustrated reports
  • team project work
  • a reflective learning journal
  • presentations.

Your final degree mark will be based 100% on your final year work.

Trips and study visits

This course has an international perspective that is reinforced by optional visits to major fashion capitals.

In Year One, this includes an optional five-day study trip to New York, with a visit to Manhattan's Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

In Year Two, you'll get to visit events in some of Europe's major fashion capitals such as Première Vision, Paris and Pitti Filati, Florence. In Year Three, you could visit an international fashion city such as Tokyo.

You'll also get to visit companies, exhibitions and trade fairs to learn about the international market. Recent examples include Bread & Butter in Berlin, Boots headquarters, L'Oréal headquarters, and ANN INC.

Exchange opportunities

The School of Art & Design have an exchange agreement with the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, which our Fashion Communication and Promotion students can apply to take part in. Recently one of our students has spent time studying at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia.

The University is also part of the Erasmus+ programme and has agreements with a number of partner institutions throughout Europe. If you're thinking about studying part of your degree abroad, Erasmus+ is a great way of experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, learning a new language and gaining a study experience which will enhance your CV.

Degree Show

You will exhibit your work as part of our Degree Show. This event includes all final-year students across NTU's Art and Design courses, and is a great platform for you to showcase your work to members of the creative industries.

You will also have the opportunity to be selected to exhibit your work to industry at Graduate Fashion Week in London, the world's leading event for fashion graduates.

There's no work placement year on this course, so we bring the industry to you.

From Year One you'll have the opportunity to work on live projects with real clients. Our students have recently worked with Paul Smith, Reiss, Unilever, L'Oréal, The Future Laboratory, All Saints, Stephen Jones Millinery, and the British Fashion Council.

Entering industry competitions will help you to gain experience and to network. Our students have been successful in the following competitions:

  • Graduate Fashion Week's Fashion Innovation Award
  • All Walks Beyond the Catwalk's Diversity NOW! (magazine and journalism)
  • L'Oreal Brandstorm (product extension and promotion team project). This year, three of our students travelled to Paris to represent the UK in the world finals.

  • Elle Beauty Breakthrough Award (journalism and fashion commentary)
  • Company magazine's #CompanyGrads fashion graduate takeover.

We actively encourage you to undertake work experience alongside your studies. Our Employability team is on hand to support you – through workshops, drop-in sessions and other activities – in applying for placement and professional practice opportunities.

You will be based in the Barnes Wallis building at the heart of the City Campus, with its modern teaching rooms, collaborative working spaces and Mac suite. These facilities are dedicated to students studying:

Notes about fees for this course

The tuition fee for UK home students joining NTU in 2018/19 on a full-time undergraduate/foundation degree programme, will be £9,250.

The fee for those who have a year-long placement as part of a sandwich course, or spend a year studying or working abroad will be published here once confirmed.

The University reviews its tuition fees each year. The fees for Home (UK / EU) undergraduate students for 2018-19 are £9250. As a guide and to enable you to plan your finances the current expectation is that the University’s current fee of £9250 per annum may increase for subsequent years of study in line with inflation and as specified by the Government.

The UCAS Tariff

In 2016 the UCAS Tariff changed. In the new tariff, the numbers awarded to qualifications are very different. So, whereas previously a B at A-level was worth 100 points, in the new tariff it is now 40 points. Sound confusing? Don't worry. We've created this calculator to help you work it out.
