Julie Nolin - MA in Intercultural and International Communication
Before applying, I did extensive research on the available university options. Would I be able to complete this degree while working? Would it truly help me in my career and would it be all that I hoped for? Through it all, the MA in International and Intercultural Communications at Royal Roads exceeded my expectations, and while I worked hard, with the support of my husband and sons it was tremendously rewarding every step of the way.
The best part of the two-year degree was the overseas residency. We spent a few weeks at Shandong Normal University in Jinan, China, accompanied by RRU faculty. It was an incredible experience to be immersed in that level of culture and education at the same time; I consider it one of the most memorable learning experiences of my life.
So, how has this degree helped me in the field of journalism? At this time in world history when an increase in intercultural competencies is greatly needed, this degree has empowered me to develop essential intercultural communication skills, both in the field as a reporter and as an instructor in a post-secondary environment. I reflect often about how fortunate I am to call myself a Royal Roads graduate.
David Oswald - BSc in Environmental Science
I began my degree at another university in a program that focused on systems design engineering – which was excellent, but highly focused on technology. I needed to see sustainability in my education, so I transferred to Royal Roads University in my third year. RRU’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program offered the perfect combination of applied science, policy and business issues.
I did not know what to expect from RRU, but I was optimistic. My expectations were exceeded, in particular, by the quality of education and instruction that I received. Uniting the practical aspects of environmental science and regulation with an interdisciplinary approach is so very pertinent to the workplace; I now have the ability to solidly grasp environmental problems from multiple perspectives.
RRU paved the way for the development of an interesting career. I developed a good foundation with which I could get a job, and it also served as a solid foundation for graduate work. The emphasis on entrepreneurship encouraged me to start a venture during graduate studies at McGill University, and that has led to founding the DE group of companies and working at the forefront of innovation in sustainability and business.
Michael Lickers - Doctor of Social Sciences
I am a teacher of Aboriginal issues, and work in Indigenous communities around the globe sharing our program and key philosophies. My current work involves the education of Indigenous youth leaders. The Doctorate program and Royal Roads University allow students to actively employ what they are learning in their workplace. My studies will allow Indigenous youth to have a dynamic voice in what leadership is to them, how they recognize leadership from an Indigenous perspective and what characteristics construct a prodigious Indigenous youth leader.
Faculty here are generously supportive and extremely knowledgeable of contemporary global requirements in today’s world, and to the nature of interdisciplinary programming. They are willing and competent to guide and challenge you to contemplate outside of what you muse.
This university is like no other and offers the opportunity to “live your learning”, actively put into practice what you are learning - and that simple fact has continued to engage me on a path of lifelong learning, being a part of Royal Roads University alumni and as a continuing student.
