About Anthropology, UG:Bachelor - at The Chinese University of Hong Kong

The undergraduate programme focuses on social and cultural anthropology, and archaeology, while introducing students to linguistics and physical anthropology. Course content covers the principles and methodology of anthropology, ethnographic studies of China, Hong Kong and the world, and contemporary issues. The curriculum is designed to: 1) provide students with a basic training in the theory and method of anthropology, 2) equip students with the analytical skills, sophistication, and open mind necessary for understanding contemporary social and cultural issues, and 3) prepare students for a wide range of careers and further studies. In the first and second years, students acquire a general training in anthropology, and in the third and fourth years, their knowledge and field work skills are consolidated by a large number of elective courses, which encourage students to pursue their own interests within the discipline.

First-year students take the compulsory first-year courses ANTH 1100 "Understanding Anthropology," ANTH 1010 "Humans and Culture," and ANTH 1710 "Understanding Archaeology." A number of other courses are also suitable for first-year students: for example, ANTH 1310 "Marriage, Family, and Kinship," and ANTH 1410 "Culture of Hong Kong", as well as some of the lower-numbered 2000-level courses such as ANTH 2310 "Gender and Culture" which provide necessary basic knowledge. Although all levels of undergraduate anthropology courses may be taken, second-year students should focus largely on 2000-level courses, while third-year and  fourth-year students should particularly focus on higher-level 3000- and 4000-level courses.

Major students acquire a minimum of 60 credits in four years. Minor students study for a minimum of 18 credits. Anthropology courses are also open to elective and general education students, as well as international and exchange students. There are seven areas of concentration which major students are encouraged to choose from, in order to better focus their studies on their own particular interests. These are:

  • Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (ANTH1710, 2370, 2710, 2720, 2730 or 2760, 2810, 4720)
  • Tourism and Cultural Representation (ANTH2230, 2520, 2730, 2760, 3370, 4220, 4720)
  • Globalization (ANTH2510, 2520, 2380, 3340, 3350, 3370, 3380, 4210, 4330, 4410)
  • Culture and Human Relations (ANTH1310, 2310, 2320, 2330, 2350, 2510, 2530, 3360, 3380)
  • Chinese Cultures and Societies (ANTH1410, 2370, 2410, 2440, 2710, 2720, 2760, 3430)
  • Values, Beliefs and Worldviews (ANTH2310, 2330, 2340, 2350, 2404, 2520, 2530, 3310, 3360, 3630, 4210)
  • Food, Health and the Body (ANTH1310, 2320, 2380, 2810, 3350, 3360, 4330).
  • Since 2006, we have been offering courses at the 4000 level. These classes are ideal for final year students, and are also suitable for third-year and fourth-year students. We encourage students interested in the subject matter to try these courses.
