Introducing MA Economics and Accounting

This combined programme is particularly useful if you are planning to take accountancy qualifications after graduation.The learning outcomes of the two subjects are complementary, both in terms of knowledge and wider-ranging skills such as IT and data interpretation (for example: corporate and public sector accounts).

Accreditation

Students can gain a number of exemptions from the professional accounting bodies: Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Association of Chartered Certificated Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), but these exemptions differ according to each accounting body.

What you will study

Year 1

Economics 1; Accountancy 1A and 1B; Computing for Business; and one option course.

Year 2

Economics 2; Accountancy 2A and 2B; Statistical Methods for Economics; and one option course.

Year 3

Topics in Microeconomics; Essentials of Econometrics; Advanced Financial Accounting; Auditing; Management Accounting Applications; Research in Management; and either Applications of Econometrics or Topics in Macroeconomics.

Year 4

A dissertation in economics or in management, two accounting honours options and two economics honours options.

The skills you learn during your programme will equip you for careers in accountancy, business, management and consultancy, or for work in aid agencies, not-for-profit organisations or government departments.

Many previous graduates have entered the finance sector and some large financial firms actively recruit Edinburgh graduates.

English language requirements

You must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

English language tests

If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:

  • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
  • TOEFL-iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
  • Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

About English language requirements

SQA and GCSE

For SQA and GCSE students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

  • SQA National 5 Grade C
  • SQA Standard Grade 3
  • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A
  • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C
  • GCSE Grade Cor 4
  • IB Standard Level Grade 5
