About Coastal and Marine Management at University Centre of the Westfjords

Coastal and Marine Management is an international, multidisciplinary master's program in natural resource management. The program is especially built on the principle and practice of biology, sociology, economics and business studies. By the end of the program students understand the innumerable and valuable resources of the coast and oceans, understand their significance, and have versed themselves in methods and skills to manage the sustainable utilisation of these resources. The language of teaching and general communication is English. The program is offered by the University Centre of the Westfjords in Ísafjörður in co-operation with the University of Akureyri. Teaching takes place in Ísafjörður.

Course Description

The master's program in Coastal and Marine Management introduces students to various methods for managing marine and coastal areas, based on economic, social, and environmental considerations.

The program consists of core courses and elective courses, plus the thesis. Core subjects are taught mainly at the beginning of the program, as they form the basis for subsequent teaching. The program focuses on management and courses promote an interdisciplinary approach. The curriculum is structured so that the courses give students a holistic view of the subject, at the same time as remaining accessible to external students. Emphasis is placed on practical approaches and solutions to real-life problems, always based upon principles of sustainable development.

Notes about fees for this course

The annual registration fee for Coastal and Marine Management at the University Centre of the Westfjords is ISK 150,000 for Icelandic students (approx, 1,250 EUR) and those from other EEA/EU countries, and for those who come from countries outside the EEA the registration is ISK 300,000.

Collection

The annual fee is collected for each academic year and should be paid by July 30 each year before the coming academic year begins. Students pay the annual fee after they receive a letter of admission.

Entry requirements

Conditions for acceptance into the Coastal and Marine Management program are that the applicant must have completed an undergraduate university degree, regardless of if it is a BA, BSc or BEd. Applicants fill out an application form and return it together with a cover letter.

Candidates can come from diverse education and work backgrounds, as the interdisciplinary nature of study is based on many fields; especially in economics, ecology, social sciences and management.

English is the communication and educational language of the program. It is anticipated that applicants from Iceland, Scandinavia and the English-speaking countries possess adequate skills in the language. The same applies to students from universities where all instruction is in English. Other applicants must demonstrate sufficient English skills with recognised tests such as TOEFL, or equivalent.
