Overview

The MA in Applied Psychology gives you an advanced understanding of the discipline of psychology in applied settings. The course is designed to help you appreciate the potential and values of applied psychology, think critically about psychological theory and practice and give you the opportunity to explore your own particular interests.

Applied psychologists use research and theory to analyse real-world situations, develop appropriate interventions, and evaluate outcomes. The course has strong links with community-based partners working with children, families and communities. The course will enable you to pursue postgraduate professional training opportunities, and to pursue a variety of career paths where psychological expertise is needed.

Successful applicants to the MA in Applied Psychology are eligible to be considered for the Ann Moloney Bursary, sponsored by Enable Ireland (see Course details below)

Part II
AP6137 Dissertation in Applied Psychology (30 credits)

Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology (NFQ Level 9, Major Award)
Students who have completed and passed modules to the value of at least 60 credits in Part I and who do not wish to proceed to Part II may opt to exit the programme and be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Psychology.

THE ANN MOLONEY BURSARY

Successful applicants to the MA in Applied Psychology are eligible to be considered for theAnn Moloney Bursary, sponsored by Enable Ireland, which acknowledges the contribution made by Ann Moloney in linking UCC psychology graduates to the applied work setting. Ann worked for over 30 years as a lecturer in the Applied Psychology Department at UCC and also as Principal Psychologist at Enable Ireland Cork. Enable Ireland is a national organisation that provides a range of services including therapy, intervention and support services for children and adults with a physical disability. The Bursary, to the value of EUR 1,000, will provide an opportunity for a psychology graduate to avail of a part-time work placement in the psychology department at Enable Ireland Cork, a placement-linked honorarium, and a parchment which is awarded at the UCC Scholarships and Prizes day.

The Bursary is awarded through an Interview Process in the School of Applied Psychology, which is completed as part of the Placement Process. Students who apply for an interview with Enable Ireland as their top choice of placement will be considered for the award.

Course Practicalities

This is a one-year full-time course. Lectures take place on Monday- Wednesday inclusive. A placement, which is a non-compulsory module (AP6153), is considered a unique learning experience that will give you workplace experience over a six-month period. Please note that placements are not guaranteed for every student.
There may be travel costs associated with module AP6153, a non-compulsory placement module.'

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are incorporated into the MA in Applied Psychology. These include essays, research funding applications, portfolios, reports, class tests, research proposals, journal of learning, class presentations, research thesis, taped practice work with transcript and analysis.
