Overview
The Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Care is designed to increase the knowledge, attitudes and skills of healthcare professionals working with palliative care, oncology and long term chronically ill patients
The School of Medicine, University College Cork, in partnership with St. Patrick's Hospital (Cork) Ltd. which includes Marymount Hospice, offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Care as an interdisciplinary course.
This is a taught course that can be taken for a minimum of 18 months over two academic years or for a maximum of 36 months over four academic years from the date of first registration to the programme.
Course Details
The Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Care is based on the definition and principles of palliative care as defined by W.H.O. 2002.
The course integrates theory with clinical practice to provide quality care and services to palliative patients and families. This care is based on legislation, national policies, evidence-based practice, research findings and professional and ethical codes of practice.
Palliative care focuses on improvement of the 'quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.' (W.H.O.p84, 2002).

The programme comprises taught modules to the value of 55 credits and a clinical practicum to the value of 5 credits.

NU6090 Therapeutic Communication Skills for Palliative Practice (5 credits)

IP6003 Symptoms in Palliative Care (10 credits)
IP6004 End of Life Care, Grief and Bereavement (10 credits)
IP6005 Clinical Practicum in Palliative Care (5 credits)
IP6006 Psychosocial and Spiritual Aspects of Palliative Care (5 credits)
Alternatively students may choose one other relevant 10-credit module, which is agreed with the Course Director, from elsewhere in UCC and which may be substituted in lieu of one of the above 10 credit modules. This module must be equivalent in level and credit rating and is subject to the agreement of the Course Coordinator and approval of the College of Medicine and Health.

Course Practicalities
Students are expected to attend twenty-one days in class in year 1 and eighteen days in class in year 2. The lectures are held two days together every two to three weeks. There are 500 clinical hours undertaken over the two years of the programme. Of this, 250 are undertaken in specialist palliative care.
Assessment
Assignments consist mainly of continuous assessments, with one formal examination in each year. The continuous assessments consist of essays, case studies, audits and self-directed learning.
