Additive manufacturing is an emerging advanced manufacture technology, sometimes referred to as 3D printing. Derby and the East Midlands are dominated by employment in advanced engineering and related industries, but there is a global lack of specialised graduates who can work in supply chain companies.
This Masters in Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing programme is designed for both engineering graduates and as a conversion programme for students who have qualifications in other analytical disciplines* such as physics or geology, enabling them to transition to careers in advanced manufacturing and other high-tech industries. The MSc programme draws on this expertise to bridge the gap between research and application informing your learning. By combining study in additive manufacturing with advanced materials, you will gain the fundamental understanding required to meet the technical challenges in the future, producing custom designs to order featuring bespoke material properties.

Turn your ideas into innovative designs
This programme will guide you through the design process, how to take your ideas, design choices and possible optimisations. You will be able to turn your ideas into reality, more than just a prototype. As part of the full MSc course you will be required to attend a one week residential based at our campus in Derby to apply the skills and knowledge you have acquired. This residential normally takes place in January before the Spring Trimester and gives you access to state of the art facilities and specialist staff at our research centre, which contains an advanced machining and additive manufacturing facility. You will also be responsible for arranging and paying for your own travel, short-term study visa (if required) and accommodation in Derby, though the university will assist where possible with the arrangements. Advances in materials and the development of additive manufacturing are particularly important to innovation in the regional advanced technology industries of trains, planes and automobiles as well as architecture and biomedical applications.
