About Applied Mathematics at University of Groningen

Why does one car have more air resistance than another? How can the frequency of the electric power smart grid be kept constant under external disturbances?

Applied Mathematics is concerned with the development andapplication of mathematical tools for the analysis and design ofdynamical systems that appear in modern technology. Mathematicalmodelling of the problems appearing there plays a basic role,followed by (numerical) analysis, (computer) simulation, and designof controllers to make the systems behave according to the desiredspecifications. Interaction with other disciplines and withspecialists in the fields of application is essential.

During your 2-year Master's programme you will be embedded inone of the Applied Mathematics research groups of your choice. Yourresearch project you will be supervised by staff members. Theresearch project can be taken in the form of an internship in theresearch division of a company as well. The Master's degree programme in Applied Mathematics offers two tracks.
Two tracks

  • Systems and control

This track is concerned with the analysis, design andoptimization of complex dynamical systems. In particular it dealswith the mathematical tools behind large scale networks, likeelectric power networks, water distribution networks, the internet,platoons of cars, formations of robots, and networks of systems ingeneral.  A central issue is the design and synthesis ofcontrollers and protocols to make these networks behave in anoptimal way. The specialization Systems and control deals withmathematical systems and control theory, and the emphasis of thisspecialization is on the mathematics behind various technologicalapplications, rather than on the applications themselves.

  • Computational mathematics

The computational sciences have revolutionized the process ofscientific discovery by adding a new mode to it, the virtuallaboratory, often complementary to theoretical, observational, orexperimental means. The mathematical contributions to this researchmethodology are twofold -- a computational model of the phenomenonof interest needs to be constructed, and secondly, algorithms forsolving the governing equations are to be developed.  Themaster track Computational Mathematics focuses on both mathematicalaspects, computational modeling and numerical algorithms. The mainapplication area is fluid dynamics. Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) has a rich tradition in the Netherlands, which has led to a strong chain from basic research to application.

A Dutch bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematicsgives direct acces. In case of other bachelor's or master'sdegrees, the board of admission will decide if you meet theadmission requirements in terms of general level of previouseducation and specific background knowledge. A special pre-masterprogramme is available for holders of a relevant Dutch HBOBachelor's degree. In case you have a Dutch bachelor's degree inMathematics or Applied Mathematics which is not obtained at theUniversity of Groningen, or a relevant Dutch HBO bachelor's degree,please contact the academic advisor.
