About Economic Geography at University of Groningen

Do you want to understand regional differences in economic structure and performance? In Economic Geography, you study the characteristics of economic activities across places and learn how to stimulate economic development.

The economy globalizes rapidly, and places become ever moreinterconnected. Simultaneously, economic activities increasinglycluster in specific places. As a result, socio-economic dynamicsare highly unequal across regions. People, firms and governmentsface very different challenges and opportunities depending on theirlocation.

In the master in Economic Geography you will learn to understand these region-specific socio-economic development paths. We focus on the actions of people and firms and how they govern regionaleconomic development: where do entrepreneurs start theirbusinesses, how do firms grow, where do people live, where do theymove to and which jobs do they have? Can we understand theirchoices? With this information on individual level, you will be able to understand regional developments and formulate policyavenues to govern such processes locally, nationally and internationally.

Our graduates are specialists in regional economic developmentwith a keen eye for the role of policy. For those interested in therole of international trade and globalization in regional economicdevelopment we offer a trackin Regional Competitiveness and Trade.

Graduates in Economic Geography Graduates are specialists inregional economic development with a keen eye for the role ofpolicy. With this specialization, EG-graduates often contribute toregional economic development strategies:

- A fair share of the graduates is employed by governmentalorganizations at all geographical levels (cities andmunicipalities, regional, national and international governmentalorganizations). This includes organizations such as the EU, thecity of Amsterdam or The Dutch Ministry of Environment andInfrastructure.

- Another large share of the graduates is active on thecommercial market, mostly in consultancies in economic development.This includes companies such as Twijnstra Gudde, Antea,

- A smaller share of the graduates enters research, teaching orentrepreneurship.

According to Elsevier (2015), job opportunities of geographersare above average with a relatively large job stability.

During the programme we offer support for your careerpreparation. The Career Services are provided by the CareersCompany and the UG Career Services.
