About Economics at University of Groningen

When and why should governments interfere in the workings of advanced economies? Why should the Central Bank bail out commercial banks that get into trouble because of a global financial crisis? And should the Ministry of Finance expand public spending if the unemployment rate gets high and the economy stagnates? In this program you will learn to assess different strategies to handle diverse microeconomic and macroeconomic problems.

The objective of the programme is to teach you economictheories at a high analytical level. An additional goal is tofamiliarise you with the application of theory and research methodsto economic practice and policy. Such a combination of rigorousacademic thinking with practical application is essential for anyprofessional active in the field of economics, either in policy orresearch. You will learn about the influence of economicfactors on society and how economic theory can be applied tointerpret and analyse economic problems. 
We offer two tracks: "Microeconomics ofMarkets and Incentives' and 'Macroeconomic Theory andPolicy'. Alternatively, you can specializein Health or in Energy Economics. It is also possible todesign your own study programme. The programme is trulyinternational, being taught entirely in English. The bestinternational textbooks are used In the various courses, studentsstudy papers published in prominent academic journals in order tokeep up with the latest developments. Courses are taught byspecialists with an international reputation in their field ofresearch and/or a key role in public debates.
