About Mathematics at University of Groningen

How does a bank check whether your digital signature is a valid one? Do planets move in stable orbits or will they eventually collide? How can a 3D-sphere within the 3D-figures be characterized?

The mathematics behind these questions is dealt within yourMaster's degree programme. Since 2016 we offer a fully renewedprogramme, with unique specialisations.
Mathematics is Groningen consists of a group of 20 internationallyacclaimed mathematical researchers. Besides the well-knowndynamical systems group, the mathematics department also has a verystrong algebra & geometry and statistics & probabilityprofile. During your 2-year Master programme you will be embeddedin the research groups of your choice.
During the Master's degree in Mathematics we will teach you themathematical knowledge, skills and attitude needed to pursue aprofessional or research career. You will gain specialisedmathematical knowledge in selected areas such as algebra andgeometry, dynamical systems and analysis, and statistics &probability theory. 
Furthermore, you will learn how to solve a problem by usingabstraction and modelling and to find scientific literature on thesubject. You will be able to determine whether the problem can besolved by using existing mathematical theory or whether new theoryshould be developed. Finally, you will learn how to presentmathematical results in written and oral form, for both specialisedand general audiences.
The Master's degree programme in Mathematics offers threetracks:

  • Mathematics and Complex Dynamical Systems:
    This Master track concerns algebra, geometry, analysis, dynamicalsystems theory and mathematical physics.
  • Statistics and Big Data:
    In this Master track the focus is on modern developments instatistical inference, such as high-dimensional inference andstatistical network modelling, as well as data science, such asmachine learning and neural networks.
  • Science, Business and Policy

A Dutch bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematicsgives direct acces. In case of other bachelor's or master'sdegrees, the board of admission will decide if you meet theadmission requirements in terms of general level of previouseducation and specific background knowledge. A special pre-masterprogramme is available for holders of a relevant Dutch HBOBachelor's degree. In case you have a Dutch bachelor's degree inMathematics or Applied Mathematics which is not obtained at theUniversity of Groningen, or a relevant Dutch HBO bachelor's degree,please contact the academic advisor.
