About Theology and Religious Studies at University of Groningen

Everyone has an opinion on religion, but few people can interpret this complex phenomenon accurately. This Master's programme trains you to become a specialist in the field of religion and culture.

The one-year Master's programme in Theology and ReligiousStudies focuses on the relationship between religion, culture andsociety. You will learn to understand and analyse theirdynamics.
You can choose from four specializations:

  • Religion, Conflict and Globalization
    You will acquire knowledge of the relationship between religion,conflict and peace building.
  • Religion and Cultural Heritage
    Specialization in material and immaterialheritage
  • Religion and Pluralism, Ancient & Modern
    Focus on the relations among Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the antique world and how these relations have formed our modernsociety.
  • Spiritual Care (Dutch only)
    You will study spiritual care in contemporary society and learn tofunction as a spiritual caregiver in an institution.


You will finish the programme by writing a thesis. All programmesare taught in English, with the exception of Spiritual Care.

Over religie heeft iedereen een mening, maar weinig mensen kunnen dit complexe fenomeen goed duiden. In deze master word je specialist op het gebied van religie en cultuur.

De eenjarige master Theologie en Religiewetenschappen richt zichop de verhouding tussen religie, cultuur en samenleving. Je leertde dynamiek hiervan te begrijpen en te analyseren.
Je kunt kiezen uit vier programma's:

  •  Religion, Conflict and Globalization
    Je verwerft inzicht in het verband tussen religie, conflict envredesopbouw;
  • Religion and Cultural Heritage
    Je specialiseert je in materieel en immaterieel erfgoed;
  • Religion and Pluralism, Ancient & Modern
    Over de relaties tussen joden, christenen en moslims in deoudheid en hoe deze relaties onze moderne samenleving hebbengevormd;
  • Geestelijke Verzorging
    Je verdiept je in de geestelijke en spirituele zorg in dehedendaagse samenleving en het functioneren van een geestelijkverzorger in een instelling.


De eerste drie programma's worden in het Engels onderwezen. Demaster sluit je af met een scriptie.
