About Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology at University of Groningen

How can intervention prevent burnout in medical students? Can mindfulness support patients in dealing with chronic disease? How can we predict obesity in young children?

Do you want to find the answers to these types of questions andare you interested in conducting research in the fields ofepidemiology, public health, health psychology, or psychiatry witha strong focus on mental and physical health?
Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology (CPE) is a selectivetwo-year research master that was rated first in its category in the Dutch Higher Education Guide 2017! The programme is unique in the sense that students are encouraged to focus on their individualdevelopment as a researcher. Therefore, classes are taught in smallgroups. Students can choose additional courses that suit theirpersonal interests and moreover, research will be conducted side byside with scientists who are leading experts in their field.
Mental and physical health and the reciprocal relationship betweenthese two form the basis of the programme. There is a strong focuson prevention, diagnosis and treatment of physical and mentalhealth conditions. The central idea is that psychological,biological and social aspects all play a role in any physicalcondition. Students conduct research in several populations,including children, adults and elderly, with or without a physicalor mental condition.

Job prospects

Your master thesis can function as the basis of your own PhDproposal. High-ranking students will be offered a full scholarshipto continue with a three-year PhD programme at the UMCG!

If you do not wish to continue as a researcher, there are plentyof other opportunities. Alumni currently work as consultants for the World Health Organization (WHO), policy officers in thegovernment, consultants for pharmaceutical or biotechnologicalcompanies or as university teachers.

Non-EU students may apply for a scholarship for CPE. The processof obtaining a scholarship is highly selective and non-EU studentswill need to indicate within their letter of motivation whether they depend on a scholarschip in order to be able to enroll in CPEor not. Furthermore it is wise to motivate why we should select youfor a scholarship.

Registration procedure

After you complete your application, the selection committeewill assess whether your educational/academic background andmotivation meet the specific programme requirements. If so,students will be invited to take part in an interview during which they can present their research (Bachelor thesis) and elaborate on their motivation to become a researcher. In addition, admissiblestudents should complete and pass an online statistics test inwhich basic statistical knowledge is tested.

For enrollment, please note that you have to apply for theprogramme via Studielink. Studentwith a Dutch degree should, after applying via Studielink, send ane-mail to cpe@umcg.nl for further instructions aboutthe application procedure.

After you complete your application, the selection committeewill assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements. After evaluating these documents, the selectioncommittee decides whether a student is invited for aninterview.
