About Sociology at University of Groningen

Are you interested in the complex interaction between individuals and their social environment? As a sociologist you understand how complicated living in a society can be, and you are equipped with knowledge and skills to find solutions for a variety of societal challenges.

The Master's degree programme in Sociology primarily focuses onpolicy development and research. The various specializations invitestudents to engage at a deeper level with the skills and knowledgethey developed in their Bachelor's degree programme.

University of Groningen Master's students in Sociology canchoose from four specializations:

  • Sociology of Employment Relations & Life Course
  • Crime and Safety
  • Sociology of Health, Care and Wellbeing
  • Social Studies

All the specializations in this Master's degree programme helpyou develop a general conceptual framework that can be applied to avariety of social issues. In addition to compulsory course unitswithin your specialization, you also follow a number ofelectives.

The degree programme is concluded with an internship and athesis. We also offer an Educational Master's degree programmein Social Studies.

There is also an international track: SocialNetworks in a Sustainable Society.

Mensen kunnen niet zonder de samenleving waarin ze leven. Ininteractie met de samenleving realiseren mensen hun doelen en debevrediging van behoeften. Sociologie gaat over de wisselwerkingtussen het individu en zijn sociale omgeving. Of anders gezegd:over de invloed van het individu op het collectief en andersom.

Sociologen laten zien hoe complex het menselijk samenleven is enwaarom simpele oplossingen veelal onbedoelde neveneffecten totgevolg hebben. Sociologen zijn toegerust met kennis en vaardighedenom een breed scala aan maatschappelijke vraagstukken te helpenoplossen.

Job prospects

Sociology is a multi-faceted degree programme. Sociologygraduates occupy a variety of positions. They find work asresearchers at a university or specialized research agency, policyofficers at a municipality or ministry, consultants for aconsultancy agency, teachers or journalists. They work in a varietyof sectors, including healthcare, education and security, primarilyin the public sector, but also in the corporate sector.

Sociologie is een veelzijdige studie. Sociologen komen na hunopleiding terecht in zeer uiteenlopende functies. Ze wordenonderzoeker aan de universiteit of bij een gespecialiseerdonderzoeksbureau, beleidsmedewerker bij een gemeente of eenministerie, consultant bij een adviesbureau, docent of journalist.Ze beoefenen deze beroepen in verschillende domeinen, zoals dezorg, het onderwijs en het veiligheidswezen. Meestal in de publiekesector, maar ook in het bedrijfsleven.
