About Psychology at University of Groningen

Are you ready for the many challenges of studying behaviour, awareness and the brain? Then this study will suit you, for psychology pervades all forms of human activity.

  • As a psychologist you deal with human behaviour and developmentin many fields, including psychological treatment, education, workplace, sports, environment, traffic, health, media, and more. Inclinical professions, for example, you are concerned with thetreatment of people with emotional or behavioural disorders orsupporting patients with neurological deficits. Developmentalissues are central to clinical work as well, since origins ofmaladaptive behaviour often lie in early childhood.

    In our bachelor programme:

    • you learn about theories of the biological, cognitive, socialand environmental factors influencing behaviour;
    • you obtain basic communicational and diagnostic skillsnecessary for work in practice;
    • you are trained to get an in-depth focus on the methodologicaland statistical knowledge and skills essential for scientificresearch;
    • you learn to reflect on scientific theory in psychology;
    • you learn to reflect on your own development aspsychologist;
    • you have the possibility to focus on a domain of your owninterest and that fits best with the track in your future Masterprogramme.

We strongly advise a firm background in English, Mathematics andBiology. In the bachelor, there is a strong emphasis on scientificresearch. Many students experience difficulties with statistics, soit is important to realize in advance that this is part of yourstudies.

previous education

If you hold an EU secondary school diploma comparable to a Dutchvwo-diploma you are also admissible (i.e. Abitur, InternationalBaccalaureate). A rule-of-thumb for students holding an EU-diploma(no rights may be derived from this): If your diploma givesadmittance to universities in the country of origin of yourdiploma, then it also gives admittance to universities in theNetherlands.

Students who finished their first year of an applied sciencesuniversity programme, cannot automatically be admitted to theBachelor of Psychology. The admissions board may ask forsupplementary requirements. Please contact the academic advisor formore information.
