About International Human Rights Law at University of Groningen

Can a church be attacked if a sniper hid in the tower during an armed conflict? Having the Polish nationality, being tortured in a Thai prison, what rights do you have? Can you invoke them and how?

Human rights are of all times and places, they are just notrecognized everywhere, nor interpreted the same in all countries.There are several human rights systems in place and, in some cases,it can leave victims and their lawyers in a situation where theyhave to choose which forum to go to or which system to choose toseek their justice.

In this programme, you will be trained in human rights at the international level, but also in international humanitarian law and other related fields of (international) law. You will learn aboutthe different systems and how human rights are interpreted within these systems and in different countries.

On top of providing the Admissions Board with transcripts anddiplomas, students should have an equivalent minimum GPA (GradePoint Average) of 7/10 (Dutch grading scale).

knowledge minimum

basic knowledge of public international law, on a similar levelas the course Public International Law, including some elementaryhuman rights law and elementary knowledge of European Law

language test

If you are not a native speaker of English, you will need toprovide proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL: 92 (all sections need to be at least 21; the writingsection needs to be at least 23)
  • IELTS: 6.5 (all sections need to be at least 6.0; the writingsection needs to be at least 6.5)
  • CAE or CPE
  • Applicants who are taking/have completed an English-taughtbachelor programme at a Dutch research university are exempt fromtaking an English proficiency test.
