If you have an A-level in Spanish, this wide-ranging degree will allow you to become fluent in a major world language and gain an understanding of the economic structures underlying business and society as a whole.
You'll interpret and analyse economic data and theories, but you'll also develop your spoken and written Spanish and gain an insight into the cultural contexts in which the language is spoken. You could even learn Catalan or build practical skills like translation and interpreting - and you'll spend a year in a Spanish-speaking country to gain first-hand experience.
Core modules will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Spanish, as well as introducing you to key elements of economic theory and equipping you with the numerical skills to succeed. You'll also choose from an impressive range of optional modules that allows you to follow your interests, from Latin American history and Spanish theatre to the global economy and international trade.
Leeds offers great facilities for language students. The most exciting resources we have are the cultural branches of the governments of Spain and Portugal - the Cervantes and Camões Institutes have branches on campus, as does the cultural arm of the Catalan autonomous government, the Ramon Llull Institute.
The institutes seek to promote language teaching and greater understanding of Spanish-speaking, Lusophone and Catalan cultures around the world. Working with our degree programmes, they host many cultural events and academic activities for our students.
In addition our fully-equipped Language Centre hosts digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Our Interpreter Training Suites also offer you the chance to explore a career in interpreting, and our Electronic Resource Information Centre houses specialised computing facilities to support translation studies.
Course content
A Joint Honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each Single Honours course, but you'll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects.
Core modules in your first year will introduce you to key aspects of economic theory, mathematics and statistics while sharpening your Spanish language skills. You'll also study one of our Cornerstone modules, which helps you bring together the different subjects of your degree.
From this starting point, you'll build your core skills in the following year with language classes, as well as modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics. You'll also choose from a range of optional modules in both subjects, allowing you to pursue your interests in topics such as labour and transport economics, Spanish-American literature or Latin American history. But you'll also prepare for your third year, where you'll study or work in a Spanish-speaking country.
When you return to Leeds, your experience will give you a fresh perspective for your final year. This is when you'll take advanced language classes to refine your spoken and written Spanish, as well as an even wider range of optional modules, from international trade and public enterprise to Spanish national identities and Latin American cinema.

A Joint Honours degree in Economics and Spanish will put you in a great position to succeed in a range of careers. Fluency in a major world language can lead you into language-specific roles and working abroad, while you'll also have a solid understanding of economic principles.
You'll also have a set of transferable skills that are valued by all kinds of employers. As well as being an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing, you will have strong research skills and be confident working in a team.
You'll be confident analysing qualitative and quantitative data. Spending a year abroad will demonstrate that you are independent and resilient, while handling two different subjects will equip you with organisational skills.

Study abroad and work placements
You'll spend your third year in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country, immersing yourself in local culture and cultivating your language skills.
We have partnerships with a number of universities in Spain and Latin America where you could study, or you could undertake a work placement. You could even work as a language assistant in a school under the British Council's programme.
Whatever you choose to do, you'll gain a new insight into a Spanish-speaking society as well as valuable experience of adapting to another culture. If you choose to work during your time there, you'll also return with work experience to increase your appeal to employers. For many of our students, it's the real highlight of their course.
