German is a major European language, and Germany remains one of the world's biggest economies. If you have an A-level in German, this degree will allow you to become fluent in an important language of global business and commerce while exploring issues in international business management.
Core modules will build your language skills and introduce you to the strategic and operational challenges faced when running foreign operations, such as the global economy or strategic management.
You'll also choose from a range of optional modules to gain an insight into German culture, history and politics. You'll even spend a year in a German-speaking country to improve your language skills and immerse yourself in the local culture. You could study German cinema, politics in the 'Berlin Republic', the writings of Christa Wolf or how Germany remembers the Second World War. You could even try translation or interpreting and learn specialised uses of German for the business context.
Our fully-equipped Language Centre offers plenty of facilities for language students, including digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). There's also an extensive lending library of foreign films and newspapers as well as other on-demand resources.
If you're interested in translation studies, our Electronic Resource Information Centre houses specialised computing facilities. Our Interpreter Training Suites also offer you the chance to explore a career in interpreting.
Accreditation
Our International Business degrees are accredited by the Institute of Export which allows you to acquire an exporting qualification after your studies and strengthens your job prospects in international trade.
Course content
A joint honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each single honours course, but you'll take fewer optional and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects.
You'll spend your first year improving your language skills and being introduced to German culture and history. Additional core modules will cover key issues in international business alongside their social, economic and political contexts - and you'll also take one of our Cornerstone modules, which helps to bring together the different strands of your degree.
In the following year, core modules will focus on language skills as well as management and the international economy. You'll also choose from optional modules on topics such as German cinema, literature, politics and applied language use. All of this will deepen your cultural awareness and prepare you for your third year, which you'll spend working or studying in a German-speaking country.
By the time you return to Leeds, you'll have a new perspective on German and the contexts in which it is spoken. This will feed into your final year, where advanced language classes will be combined with a wider range of options including translation, transnational corporations and using German in a professional context. You'll also apply the skills and understanding you've developed to an international business topic of your choice.

Career opportunities
A Joint Honours degree in German and International Business will give you a thorough understanding of the challenges and opportunities in international business management, as well as fluency in the language of Europe's largest economy. Both of these qualities are valuable to employers, and they could open doors to a variety of careers at home and abroad.
But you'll also have transferable skills that they actively seek. You'll work well within a team, but you'll also be a confident independent researcher - and spending time abroad will prove you are adaptable and resilient. You'll also have excellent presentation, communication and analytical skills, as well as a high level of commercial awareness. Managing two subjects will even equip you with organisational skills.
Graduates have gone on to succeed in careers as diverse as management, business and finance, marketing, education, journalism and the civil service. Others have pursued postgraduate study or specialised training in language-based fields such as translating or interpreting.

Study abroad and work placements
You'll spend your third year in either Germany or Austria, immersing yourself in local culture and cultivating your language skills.
We have partnerships with a number of universities in the region where you could study, or you could undertake a work placement. You could even work as a language assistant in a school under the British Council's programme.
Whatever you choose to do, you'll gain a new insight into German or Austrian society as well as valuable experience of adapting to another culture. If you choose to work during your time there, you'll also return with work experience to increase your appeal to employers. For many of our students, it's the real highlight of their course.
