Italy has been an important player in Europe for centuries and has a huge, rich cultural heritage. If you've never studied it before, this degree will allow you to learn Italian from scratch while gaining an understanding of the strategic and operational issues involved in running successful foreign operations.
Core modules will introduce key issues in international business, as well as developing language skills. But we also offer a wide range of optional modules so you can study the topics that interest you, from Dante and Petrarch to minority languages and using Italian in business. You'll even spend a year in Italy to gain first-hand experience.
From transnational corporations to Primo Levi via Renaissance humanism and today's global economy, this broad-based degree will equip you with a wide range of skills. You'll gain awareness of another culture alongside valuable business knowledge, supported by the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL).
Digital language labs, audio/video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) are all housed in our fully-equipped Language Centre. It also stocks an extensive lending library of foreign films and newspapers among other on-demand resources.
If you're interested in translation studies, we also offer specialised computing facilities in our Electronic Resource Information Centre. Our Interpreter Training Suites also offer you the chance to explore a career in interpreting.
Accreditation
Our International Business degrees are accredited by the Institute of Export which allows you to acquire an exporting qualification after your studies and strengthens your job prospects in international trade.
Course content
A Joint Honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each Single Honours course, but you'll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects.
You'll spend your first year taking core modules on the principles of international business, as well as developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Italian and discovering Italian history and culture. You'll even take one of our Cornerstone modules to help you make connections between your subjects.
This will give you a firm foundation to build on in the following year, when you'll continue with core modules on topics like management and research, but also choose from optional modules in topics such as Dante and linguistic variation in modern Italy. However, this year will also focus on building your language skills ahead of year three, which you'll spend in Italy to gain first-hand experience of the local culture.
When you return to Leeds, you'll have a new perspective and much sharper language skills that will allow you to take part in advanced Italian classes, as well as an even broader range of optional modules. You'll also study issues such as strategic management to develop your knowledge of international business, and you'll have the chance to specialise on a topic of your choice when you complete a dissertation.

A Joint Honours degree in International Business and Italian will equip you with fluency in a major European language and a thorough understanding of the key issues in international business management.
Both of these qualities are valuable to employers, but you'll also have transferable skills that they actively seek such as teamwork, presentation and communication, research, critical thinking and a high level of commercial awareness.
You'll also have the advantage of your residence abroad, which will demonstrate your independence and resilience - and managing two subjects will give you organisational skills.
Graduates have pursued a variety of careers in areas such as management, business and finance and marketing as well as education, the civil service and journalism. Others have gone into postgraduate study or specialised training in language-based disciplines like translation or interpreting.

Study abroad and work placements
You'll spend your third year in Italy, immersing yourself in local culture and cultivating your language skills.
We have partnerships with a number of Italian universities where you could study, or you could undertake a work placement. You could even work as a language assistant in an Italian school under the British Council's programme.
Whatever you choose to do, you'll gain a new insight into Italian society as well as valuable experience of adapting to another culture. If you choose to work during your time there, you'll also return with work experience to increase your appeal to employers. For many of our students, it's the real highlight of their course.
