This course is for you if you are looking to study for an Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies degree but would benefit from an initial 2 years part-time study providing intensive, well-structured support to enable development of academic skills and knowledge. You will be taught in the supportive environment of the Lifelong Learning Centre by enthusiastic specialists in their field who are keen to extend your knowledge and build your academic confidence. Our student support service offers advice and guidance, academic skills support, welcome events and social events throughout your studies.
Study will enable you to develop your knowledge and understanding of Islam, Middle Eastern culture and the Arabic language. It will build your academic confidence by concentrating on research, critical thinking, writing and communication skills.
On successful completion you can progress on to level 2 of a degree in Arabic, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at the University of Leeds.

The CertHE offers a different pathway into higher education and features intensive support to enable you to reach your full potential. It has been designed to fit into your life commitments and is taught one day a week.
We know that many mature and part-time students face unique challenges, including balancing academic study with family and work commitments. For that reason, the Lifelong Learning Centre provides specialist guidance, advice and support to mature and part-time students, from pre-application right through to graduation and beyond.
Over the two years of the CertHE, you will take core and optional modules which allow you to broaden your knowledge in a variety of disciplines related to the Islamic tradition and Middle Eastern culture and society. In addition to this, you will be equipped with a wide range of academic skills assisting your personal and professional development.
Depending on your interests, you can choose to progress on to level 2 of the Islamic Studies BA or Middle Eastern Studies BA taught by the University's Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (AIMES) department. The course operates as a 2+2 degree meaning you study part-time for the first two years and full time for the remaining two years.
Alternatively, you could join the year abroad of the Arabic and Islamic Studies BA or Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies BA, where you will have the opportunity to experience the life and culture of an Arabic speaking country. If you choose this pathway you will study part-time for the first two years and full time for the remaining three years.
Course content
The course is designed to encourage you to consider different approaches to complex ethical issues and to reflect upon global and cultural perspectives of Islam and the wider Middle East. In year one, you will study introductory modules in Arabic and Middle Eastern religions along with personal and academic skills modules. In year 2 the compulsory and optional modules you take will depend on your intended progression route, your tutor will be able to advise you further on this.
All of our students acquire basic Arabic language skills in their first year. Provision is available for students wishing to further their language skills through the delivery of advanced language modules in the second year of study, especially for those wishing to progress onto degrees with a strong Arabic component
