MGeog with international Development is an exciting new programme offered for the first time in September 2015. The programme provides the opportunity to take three years of courses from the BA/BSc Geography programme and then a specialist fourth year in International Development, which will lead to a Master of Geography with International Development qualification. The programme will develop students' specialist understanding of international development principles, concepts and practice and build transferable skills that will be of value to those pursuing a career in international development. All four years of this programme are eligible for student loan support.
The first three years of the programme will be primarily undertaken in the Geography Department, while the final year will be taught by the Institute of Development Policy and Management alongside other postgraduate masters students on the postgraduate International Development programmes. The Manchester Geography department is rated among the highest both in the UK and globally, while IDPM is a centre of research excellence in the field of international development. The results of the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) ranked IDPM first in a Research Power ranking in Development Studies, with many of its researchers deemed to be `world leading'. IDPM has a long experience of providing specialist teaching and training, with graduates regularly finding employment in international organisations (UN, UNICEF, UNDP), national and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government ministries. Some pursue further studies and specialise in international development research. This is an exciting new opportunity that will equip students with the knowledge and transferable skills valued by employers in international development.
