About Master of Teaching and Learning, MTchgLn - at University of Waikato

This programme, available in English or Maori Medium, develops students' critical understanding of research-based pedagogical approaches, learning theory, inquiry skills and content knowledge so that they are able to effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools.

Students also gain valuable practical experience, working at least 40 weeks of the year in a variety of classroom settings, with the professional support of faculty lecturers and mentor teachers.

The programme is underpinned by adult learning principles and there is an expectation that student teachers think critically and work independently.

Papers examine teaching in the New Zealand context, evidence-based inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and curriculum design and implementation. Students complete six 500 level postgraduate papers (180 points).

Master of Teaching and Learning

This is a more intensive course aimed at high achievers. The one year programme is from January-December and requires a higher entry criteria. The advantage of completing this aspirational course is a higher starting salary when entering the teaching profession. A highly practical in-school programme a significant amount of the programme is based in partner schools and includes 20+ weeks of working with students in classrooms.

Master of Teaching & Learning (Primary & Secondary)

This programme will develop critical understanding of research based pedagogical approaches, learning theory and content knowledge to effectively teach diverse learners in New Zealand schools. Students complete six 500 level postgraduate papers (180 points). Practical experience consists of 10 weeks full-time and two weeks part-time. A highly practical in-school programme a significant amount of the programme is based in partner schools and includes 20+ weeks of working with students in classrooms. The reward for completing this more intensive programme is a higher entry point salary on entering the teaching profession.

Te Arareo He Tohu Paerua Whakangungu (Kura or Wharekura)

This is the first Initial Teacher Education programme at Masters level in New Zealand for preparing teachers for Māori medium contexts. It is a demanding programme  aimed at high achievers who have a high level of Māori language fluency who want to be teachers in Māori medium settings.  The programme has been developed in close partnership with local kura and wharekura with a significant part of the programme involving school practice.  A highly practical in-school programme a significant amount of the programme is based in partner schools and includes 20+ weeks of working with students in classrooms. The reward for completing this more intensive programme is a higher entry point salary on entering the teaching profession.

  • Entry requirements: A bachelors degree and B+ average, a level of proficiency in te reo Maori is required.

Te Toi Arareo Master of Teaching and Learning (Māori Medium):

Mā te reo, ngā ūara me ngā waiaro Māori tēnei hōtaka e kawe. Nā te tautoko a ngā Wharekura me ētehi Kura Arareo te take i tū ai tēnei kaupapa. He hōtaka whakangungu pouako hei tautoko i ngā pūtoi ako me ngā marautanga Māori pērā ki Te Aho Matua, ngā Kura ā Iwi, ngā Marau ā Kura me te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

Delivery of the programme is through te reo, using Māori values and attitudes. It has been developed in collaboration with whanau, hapu and iwi so that it meets the criteria demanded in today's kura and wharekura. It aligns with contemporary thinking about teacher preparation and will contribute to a more integrated schooling system in the future. The programme prepares students to work effectively among different philosophies/kaupapa eg. Te Aho Matua, Iwitanga, and Rumaki.
