About Heritage Studies with Nautical Archaeology, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The programme combines an exploration of general and broadly-based Heritage issues, with more specialist or particular aspects of the field. The programme will equip students with an understanding and appreciation of the wider field of Heritage, which includes a work placement at level 5 and time in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives at level 6. This provides students with both an attractive approach to study as well as equipping them with an appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the cultural industries.

This general understanding of Heritage and the Heritage sector will then be combined with two modules in the area of specialisation, namely Nautical Archaeology. The pathway in Nautical Archaeology draws upon a particular strength within the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology in the field of Nautical Archaeology. Students will gain knowledge about the heritage surrounding the sea, the conservation of materials, the computerisation of structures and residues, the processes of acquisition and preservation, and then the knotty questions surrounding display and public access. Particular focus during this pathway will be on the Newport Ship project, a medieval ship excavated in Newport and now on public display.

The programme therefore offers a unique combination of the general and the particular; an awareness of wider Heritage issues and concerns, alongside a more concentrated focus upon different aspects of it. This mix will equip students with an attractive and appropriate set of skills and understandings applicable to a broad range of employments in the Heritage sector.
