About Psychology, BSc - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The single honours programme will provide you with comprehensive knowledge and skills in understanding how and why people behave in the ways they do and the ability to apply that knowledge in a variety of individual and group settings.

You will explore the link between psychological theory, research and practice, with a focus on producing a scientific understanding of the links between the mind, brain, behaviour and experience, and how we can try to influence these processes to improve individual, organisational, and societal health and wellbeing.

The programme has a strong emphasis on developing psychological research skills and an understanding of research ethics, culminating in an independent final year research project.
The programme will explore issues such as:

  • How do humans communicate in society and how is this changing in the face of technology and social media?
  • How does the human brain influence the ways that we think, feel and behave?
  • How can we apply our knowledge of the ways in which people think, feel and behave in order to tackle problems in society?
  • How can we promote physical and psychological well being and encourage individuals to behave in a healthier way?
  • What can be done to help in the treatment of mental illness?

In addition, this single honours Psychology degree will equip students with a strong set of critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, plus many other transferable skills considered desirable by employers and post-graduate courses.

Students will develop strong IT and numeracy skills as well as strong critical writing skills. The nature of assessments within the single honours degree will provide students with experience of presenting work through a variety of media such as oral and written presentations. The development of team-working skills and independent learning are carefully supported throughout the degree.

Key Features

The single honours Psychology degree will allow students to study a challenging and rewarding programme of psychological study delivered in a supportive environment by an established team of psychology lecturers.
The friendly and communicative approach of the academic team, based in a welcoming campus environment, allows our students the opportunity to thrive in their studies.

In line with the strong research culture of the School, the single honours programme will be structured around research-informed modules delivered by internationally recognised lecturers, with a focus on the application of psychological theory aimed at understanding and improving individual, organisational, and societal health.

You will be actively engaged in research from your first day on the course, and in your final year will be encouraged to present your research at national conferences.

Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

For 2017 entry (new UCAS tariff for courses starting in September 2017):

  • Typical offers are made for 112 tariff points for the BSc Psychology programme. The single honours Psychology programme is aimed at A-level school leavers and those who have left education and now wish to return.
  • There is no expectation that A-level candidates will have studied psychology at A-level, and although they typically would have studied a social science at A-level students with a mix of subjects across the A-level spectrum are welcome.

We place great importance on encouraging non-standard entry students with relevant life skills and academic potential to join our course. Additional study skills support is available for any student needing more intensive tuition, and the nature of assessments and feedback in the first year provide ample opportunity for students who may be lacking in academic experience or confidence to develop their academic style.
