About Motorsport Engineering, BEng - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The 4 year BEng Motorsport Engineering programme is intended to provide you with a thorough grounding in mechanical engineering science and its application to design and the solution of a range of engineering problems in the context of the motorsport engineering industry.

The inclusive foundation year is designed to develop your mathematical, analytical and study skills, to equip you with the necessary academic skills required to successfully study engineering at a degree level.

Specialist areas of study including advanced engine design and vehicle dynamics will enable you to focus on areas of specialist interest that can be developed in the Group and Major Project modules. Within many of the modules the course considers the environmental aspects of design and technology which are transferable to a broad range of employment opportunities.

The courses are also supported by extracurricular opportunities to apply the theoretical knowledge learnt in the modules to real life Motorsport applications.

Key Features

Specialist areas of study including advanced competition engine design and competition vehicle dynamics will enable you to focus on areas of specialist interest that can be developed in the Group and Major Project modules. Within many of the modules the course considers the environmental aspects of design and technology which are transferable to a broad range of employment opportunities.

Access to an extensive range of engineering facilities including dedicated Race Workshops, Engine Dynamometers, Composites, Machine Shop, Simulator and to staff with industrial experience.

You wish to develop your analytical skills in subjects such as Mathematics and Physics to pursue a career in Engineering. You do not have the academic entry requirements for one of our 3 year degree courses but you are passionate about cars in general and motorsport in particular. You see a career in the motorsport industry as your ultimate goal.

You may already be involved in some form of motorsport but this is not essential as we will give you the opportunity to gain hands on engineering experience in real competition, if you want to get involved with one of our teams.

Modules

The foundation year is designed to develop your mathematical, analytical and study skills, to equip you with the necessary academic skills required to successfully study engineering at a degree level. Your academic skills will be developed through engineering relevant modules including Mathematics, Engineering Science, Study Skills and IT, Manufacturing Technology and an Engineering Project.

In the following years of the programme a number of themes are developed.

The Core Engineering theme with subjects such as Maths, Thermodynamics, Mechanics and Structures is introduced in Year 1, developed in Year 2 with Thermofluid Mechanics and Engineering Structural Design and then explored in greater depth in Year 3 with Stress Analysis and Advanced Computational Methods.

The DesigntTheme starts in Year 1 with CAED, and is then developed in Year 2 with Computational Methods and the Group project leading into Advanced Computational Methods and the Major Project in Year 3.

Finally the Applied Technology theme moves through Vehicle Technology in Year 1, though Motorsport Vehicle Dynamics and Powertrain Control in Year 2 to Advanced Motorsport Vehicle Dynamics and Competition Engine Design in Year 3. Although not a theme in itself, Engineering Management, introduced in Year 2, underpins a successful approach to both the Group and Major Projects.

Assessment

The course is assessed by a mixture of coursework, phase tests, presentations, vivas and examinations.

Career Opportunities

Graduates from this course have found employment throughout motorsport from specialist component manufacturers though to Formula 1 and WRC teams. Graduates are now working in roles such as high performance engine development and calibration and aerodynamic design. The skills developed on the course are transferable to other industries and many students have moved into the wider automotive industry as well working for OEMs such as Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and tier one suppliers such as Mahle. Each year a number of our graduates have chosen to continue their academic studies to Masters and PhD level.

Further Information

UWTSD's racing projects bring students right into the heart of Motorsport, providing real hands on experience in real world racing scenarios.

Team MCR is made up of students from our BEng, BSc and HND Motorsport Programmes. The student project is supported by two members of staff in advisory roles.

Students dedication, passion and enthusiasm is what makes this project special. Without the efforts of the students the team wouldn't exist and they are grasping the unique opportunity to learn in such a practical way with both hands.

The team race an MCR Sports Prototype race car built specifically for the Sports 2000 series. The car was originally built by MCR Race cars in Solva, Wales and the University enjoy a fantastic collaborative relationship with the company. The car has a 2 liter Ford Duratec engine using regulation throttle bodies and ECUs.
