Course Overview

All subjects studied on the programme are relevant to the world of work within the public and voluntary sectors. The skills developed to achieve academic success are also those required by employers and for study at higher levels. The university works closely with relevant public and voluntary sector organisations and has developed a number of student schemes that give the students an invaluable insight into working within the sectors. The involvement of employers, visiting speakers and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives opportunities to students to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.

The programme integrates theoretical study and application to real world cases, in each module's teaching strategy but also in direct interaction with the University's external partnerships, including employers' organisations, professional associations and other public sector organisations.

In particular our graduates have analytical, research, interpersonal, cross cultural communication and empathetic skills. The skills of managing ICT, communication to peers and external organisations, numeracy, problem solving, interacting in teams, ethical reasoning, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership have been particularly applauded.

Students' progress through the programme ensures that they become increasingly self-confident and capable of managing their own learning. Graduates will have developed self-confidence and the ability to work in diverse environments and communicate to a wide variety of levels.

Key Features

This programme offers an academically challenging, vocational experience which incorporates innovative teaching and assessment methods. Students will be expected to be active in managing their learning experience, to be creative and to take initiatives to develop themselves.

The opportunity to take on public or voluntary sector work experience is a rewarding intellectual experience which also provides a well-grounded base for future career development. The University's international perspective and integration with employers and professional associations guarantee relevant and current content. The wide range of extracurricular activities both subject related and social, further enhance the student experience.

The friendly approach of the University allows early diagnosis of learning needs and support for skill enhancement. This includes respect for specialist needs. There is a learning support team who run regular workshops and tutorials in basic and advanced skill development. The close working relationships between tutors and students and students and their classmates allows a positive active learning environment.

The programme boasts a high employability rate for graduating students who are in work within six months of completing the degree. A significant number of graduates also progress to postgraduate studies.

Modules

Year 1 provides an introduction to the key public services disciplines, including behavioural dynamics, legal process & criminal law, social theory, public services environment and develops vital employability skills within academic skills and leading self modules. Students have the opportunity to work with an external organisation to see theory in action and acquire valuable skills.

Year 2 covers accountability, terrorism & public service responses, equality, diversity & communities, contemporary issues, whilst developing leadership and team building skills through activities. Employability skills and Voluntary work experience opportunities exists which will be assessed for credits.

Year 3 develops the themes of strategy, leadership, corporate responsibility, management and consider emerging issues within the public sector. Students will complete a research project in a contemporary public sector topic.

Professional Accreditations

Since 2012 those desiring to enter the police service have been required by some forces to complete The Certificate of Knowledge of Policing (CKP) which is a level 3 qualification. Completion of the CKP does not guarantee entry into the police service but maybe an entry requirement for certain forces.

As a result we have embedded the CKP into a third year module in order to give our students the best opportunity to apply to enter their chosen profession.

Assessment

All modules are 20 credits. Assessments include; essays, reports, presentations and reflective blogs.

Level 5 and 6 (second and final years) only have examinations (two 2 hour open-book examinations at each level).

Level 5 (second year) includes an assessed work experience 20 credit module.

Career Opportunities

Graduates exit with significant subject knowledge and up to date skills designed for the modern workplace. Possible careers are very diverse, including the prison service, justice system; past students have gained employment as PCSOs, police officers, fire officers, management training within public and 3rd sector organisations, or further study including nursing, paramedics, legal system and master's qualifications.

The programme's interaction with employers, the possibility of integration of work based learning and internships further accentuate the employability of graduates and the currency of the programme content.

Further Information

The programme runs voluntary work schemes with the police service - METPOL, the fire service - METFIRE, Swansea Prison and other voluntary organisations.

The students are engaged with the many facets of life in the uniformed public sector and work with the community to gain this experience. Some of these projects will be working with other students and young people in safety campaigns across the city such as the 'safer Swansea Scheme' and will allow the students to develop their communication skills.

The students are also involved with marshalling events in the city such as Bonfire Night at the St Helen's ground which attracts 1500 people to the area, the 'Carnage' events in the city's pubs and clubs and Saturday night marshalling on Wind street and the Strand.

They will be working with victim protection in the prison, carrying out vital work ensuring prisoners do not contact their victims whilst in prison, as well as taking part in restorative justice. The schemes give the students a valuable insight into the reality of the profession and therefore create realistic expectations for them when they leave university. The aim is to give them the best opportunity for progression into their chosen profession.

Entry Criteria

80 UCAS points or equivalent.
