Course Overview

The MA Creative Sound Production offers participants the opportunity to extend their technological and compositional skills in a variety of musical genres and applications. Situated in the former BBC Building, the department boasts a suite of state-of-the-art studios and recording spaces, fully equipped with industry-standard hardware and software.

It is anticipated that the vast majority of students that will apply for the programme will have a great interest in aspects such as audio engineering, sound creation and manipulation, etc. It is expected that the typical student would already be familiar with the generic principles and use of audio recording, digital audio workstations, and synthesis. Detailed knowledge of the specific software packages to be used on the course is taught where appropriate.

The course is to be written in a flexible way so as to be able to include the latest contemporary sound production and manipulation techniques. Students who wish to pursue a more technical slant in their work are free to do so, as long as they also satisfy the creative aspects of the learning outcomes. In this sense, therefore, an assumption of the programme is that 'creativity' is also an integral element of innovative technical solutions to real-world problems.

An important part of the course is that it provides numerous opportunities to collaborate and interact with other disciplines and practitioners within the School: film-makers; animators; new media producers; and, game designers.

The MA Creative Sound Production provides a unique opportunity for the student to develop important and rare skillsets at postgraduate level suitable for local, national, and international employment.

It will allow the student to relate their own musical and technological approaches to current practice and to develop a creative portfolio of work through new practices and techniques.

Assessment

The course is assessed using a mixture of practical work (eg recordings, software, compositions), presentations, and written work (eg essay, production diary, learning journal).

Career Opportunities

The programme is designed to allow the graduate of the MA to work in a number of different roles. According to the ongoing industry liaison which takes place in the School, there are likely to be employment prospects across a range of digital media and commercial sectors, including radio stations, film, software houses, and digital media companies.

Additional Costs

Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities. However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, and printing.

Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

The normal entry requirements are:

(a) A degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline.

(b) For graduates of non-UK universities, sufficient command of spoken and written English to meet the demands of the programme (eg IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).

Due to the nature of the programme and the need to be familiar with certain concepts and operating principles of sound recording and audio engineering, students would normally have studied previously in these areas, or be able to provide evidence of sufficient experience working in this area with appropriate hardware and software.

Example of this would be:

a graduate of the UWTSD Music Technology degree;
a graduate of a digital media degree course that has significant AV content; and,
a person who has gained a degree in an unrelated subject but who has had sufficient exposure to the audio industry, or recording studios, to be familiar with the requisite concepts.

Equivalent qualifications will be considered for entry onto the programme. For example, a candidate with a good HND, together with at least five years' relevant experience, would be considered. The candidate would be expected to provide evidence to support his/her application.
