Course Overview

This MA engages you in debate about drama and theatre during the twentieth century to today and their relationship to wider society. Community and Popular theatres, Revolutionary Drama, Theatre and the State and British drama are the key study areas and there is the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic arising from the course. The MA is taught through seminars and tutorials and the degree is awarded upon successful completion of four modules and a dissertation.

Modules

British Drama - explores dramatists' presentation of Britain as a changing social and cultural entity from 1900 to today
Drama and Revolution - examines the development of a repertoire of revolutionary drama and theatre from a range of countries and decades of the twentieth century
Theatre and Community - explores key movements and philosophies of theatre's role as social, popular and moral entertainment
Theatre and the State - examines theatre's relationship with the State through issues such as censorship, funding, opposition and identity
Dissertation - an opportunity to develop your own research project that engages with issues and debates that arise from your studies

Assessment

This course will be assessed through formative and developmental assessment.

Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

An applicant can be considered eligible to register the Master's programme provided he/she holds one of the following qualifications prior to commencement:

(a) an initial degree from an approved degree awarded body;

(b) a non-graduate qualification which has been deemed to be of an appropriate standard for the purpose of postgraduate admission;

An applicant may also be admitted to candidature provided that he/she has held, for a minimum of two years, an appropriate position which is relevant to the scheme being pursued.

Applicants are required to satisfy the Programme Director that he/she is of the required academic standard to complete the proposed Programme of Study.
