Course Overview

This programme has been developed to help develop engineers to meet the needs of function, the user and society, but which can be developed and delivered to the market rapidly. The programme examines key areas in product design within an engineering environment. The programme develops students' skills students in engineering design and analysis, design for manufacture financial and people management while comprehensively developing engineering design skills. The discipline embraces key areas such as Advanced Computer Aided Design and Manufacture and Structural Integrity and Material Evaluation.

Assessment

Assessment used within this programme is usually formative or summative. Assessments are designed to develop students' ability to practice a wide range of tools and techniques and to see the strategic implications of decisions and problems. These typically take the form of case studies, research and critical evaluation exercises and practical work based reports to resolve problems, develop a purchasing or quality strategy, for example. In some modules students are required to present their research/findings to their lecturer's and peers followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are utilised by the course team to generate student driven work.

Career Opportunities

This programme provides graduates with a wide range of professional skills and competencies that are transferrable within business sectors and from sector to sector. Oral and written skills are developed enabling individuals to grow in confidence through the programme of study. Typical career opportunities are project manager, asset management, engineering manager, product development and launch manager. Most of our graduates have been able to find employment and further their careers. Project management is seen as a valuable skill and asset that facilitates a strong company performance.

The School of Engineering Manufacturing and Logistics prides itself on providing a supportive and friendly learning environment enhanced by the excellent industrial experience of the programme team, many of whom have experience in industry at a senior level. This knowledge and experience has enabled all of our graduates to obtain an excellent grounding in the subject area which they have attributed to a caring and dedicated programme team. Class sizes are generally around 25 students which creates an environment where students can foster ideas and discuss issues that they have in common with their fellow students.

Our extensive engagement with employers and professional institutions means we are able to enhance our graduates employment and career prospects. Our vision for students is to create an environment that will enable then to achieve highly and enhance their career prospects and earning potential.

Entry requirements

Entry Criteria

An Honours degree 2.2 or above classification in an appropriate discipline. The nature of the programme is such that candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds will be considered.

Equivalent qualifications will be considered for entry onto the programme. For example, a candidate with a good HND, together with at least five years relevant experience would be considered. The candidate would be expected to provide evidence to support his/her application. Our offers are not solely based on academic results. We will take your skills, achievements and work experience into consideration. Evidence of personal professional and educational experience will be sought, to provide indicators of the ability of an individual to satisfy the requirements of the programme.
