About Medical Education (MMedEd, PG Dip, PG Cert), PG Cert, PG Dip, MMedEd - at University of Warwick

Designed for experienced clinical professionals who have responsibility for education and training, the Medical Education programme covers the principles and methods of teaching and learning and their application to healthcare. The programme provides you with the skills needed to plan and deliver successful teaching and learning sessions

Its flexible, modular structure allows you to study over a period and to a level suited to your own professional needs and circumstances.

Taught by experienced clinicians and leading academics in the field of medical education, this course will enhance your knowledge and skills as an educator and give you the confidence to apply them in your own professional practice.

Elements of the course are accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Successful completion of the first module, 'Essentials of Clinical Education', entitles participants to recognition as an Associate of HEA, whilst successful completion of the PGCert entitles participants to recognition as a Fellow of HEA.

Course structure:

You can take the Masters in Medical Education on a part-time basis over a period of two to five years. Based on modular learning, it gives you the opportunity to progress from Certificate to Diploma to a full Masters degree (MMedEd). If you do not wish to study to Masters level, you can stop at either the Certificate or the Diploma stage, obtaining valuable qualifications that will greatly enhance your skills and knowledge.

  • Certificate stage: The first three core modules to be completed in the order listed below
  • Diploma stage: Certificate stage modules, two core modules and one optional module
  • Masters stage: Diploma stage modules, Professional Project plus one optional module

  • Learning Technologies in Healthcare Education


Other modules available within the WMS taught postgraduate/CPD framework with a demonstrable relevance to medical education may be taken, subject to entry requirements and approval by the Course Director.

Entry process:

All candidates initially register for the Essentials of Clinical Education module, which they may take as a stand-alone module or in conjunction with two other core modules required to attain the PGCert in Medical Education.

Students who successfully complete the PGCert modules will be offered the opportunity to upgrade to the PGDip/MMedEd provided their provisional results in the first three modules indicate that they are likely to have the capability to complete the PGDip/MMedEd successfully.

Entry requirements:

All candidates must satisfy the Board of Graduate Studies’ requirements for entry. All candidates must have experience in teaching and be currently actively involved in teaching activities. Candidates will be educated to first degree level and normally be healthcare professionals.

Applicants for research degree modules should normally possess a first degree of at least upper second class honours standard or the equivalent and/or a Masters degree or its equivalent. The requirement for a first degree may be waived in the case of post-experience modules for candidates who can demonstrate sufficient relevant work experience.

Teaching methods:Each module is organised as a five-day intensive study block. You will be taught through lectures and seminars. In addition to intensive face-to-face teaching, the foundation module also features online learning, including resource-based teaching and online discussion.Assessments:Each module is assesssed by a 4,000 word written assignment. The first two assignments include a reflective teaching portfolio. The Professional Project assessment is a report of 8,000-10,000.
