About English and Communication Studies, BA - at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU)

As a student of the BA English and Communication Studies programme, you will have access to almost all of the modules offered in the Department of English, across our specialist areas of English language and literature, and communication and media.

The unique level of choice and flexibility makes this programme ideal for both international and domestic students. Like our other English programmes, it has modules on translation and interpreting between English and Chinese, as well as a unique specialised module on literary translation. The programme's flexible structure, however, means that these modules are not compulsory, allowing both international and domestic students to follow alternative routes.

Why should I study English and Communication Studies at XJTLU?

  • Access a full range of modules taught in the department
  • Have more options than any other degree programme - during Years Two to Four, you can choose 18 modules from a choice of over 40
  • In Years Three and Four all subject modules are optional, giving you complete control over your programme of study
  • Earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool, a member of the Russell Group of leading UK universities.

Knowledge and skills

Communications and the media play an increasingly central role in modern society, economics and politics, making English, the global communications language, more important than ever before. You will gain an understanding of the changing use of language and other forms of communication, and the ways in which they inform and influence contemporary society.

By the time you graduate from the BA English and Communication Studies programme, you will be able to:

  • communicate professionally in English, within the context of journalism and the media
  • understand the theories and analytical techniques associated with linguistics, literature, culture and communication
