Lots of students choose to study a computer animation degree to build a greater understanding of the animation sector. Animation degrees cover a wide range of topics including animated character design, graphic design, special effects, and video graphics. The most common specialisation is 3D animation.

During a three year undergraduate animation degree, students will learn the fundamentals of animation, including 2D and 3D concepts. Some institutions also encourage students to take a four year animation degree instead; with a placement year during the third year to work directly in the industry for an animation company. Students will most likely have to work towards a final piece in their last year of study, and this is commonly used in a portfolio to present their ability of work to potential employers.

Alternatively, students can opt to study a postgraduate degree in computer animation. Most students will choose to study a very specific postgraduate animation degree, as they can apply their knowledge directly to their career when they graduate. Postgraduate degrees in animation usually take between one and two years to complete.
