About Economics and Econometrics, MSc - at University of Exeter Business School

Structured for those who wish to develop their quantitative and modelling skills for economics analysis, this MSc combines a strong background in Economics with advanced training in Econometrics. For some of the advantages of choosing Exeter, see Economics at Exeter.

You will complete five compulsory modules and two optional modules over the first two semesters, and a personal dissertation in the third. One of your module options must be an advanced macroeconomics or microeconomics module. The other can be selected from any department at the University, allowing for timetabling restrictions. The choice of dissertation subject is not restricted to Econometrics; you can choose any topic from the fields of Economics and Econometrics. Your dissertation supervisor will help you locate good source materials, and this is an excellent opportunity to carry out research of your own and explore an area that interests you.

Based on the Streatham Campus, the course mixes traditional lecture-based learning with a weekly seminar series in which all students from the Economics disciplines participate. This gives you a chance to mix with people on different programmes and discuss current research in the field of Economics in an informal student-led environment.

The second semester also includes a seminar where, as part of a group, you read and analyse an important academic paper in depth, and present it to the other students.

You then proceed to a dissertation that is completed over the last 3 months of the MSc programme. This involves producing a piece of independent research typically related to an aspect of econometrics under the supervision of a member of staff that whose research is related to your interests. The dissertation is supported by a dissertation workshop that provides guidance on how to develop a research project.

You are not restricted to writing your dissertation only on Econometrics ideas – in fact you can choose any topic from the field of Economics and Econometrics. Your personal dissertation supervisor will help you locate good source materials, but this is an excellent opportunity to carry out research of your own and explore an area that interests you.
