About Leadership Studies, MRes - at University of Exeter Business School

This programme is an ideal route to further research in leadership studies, such as an M.Phil or Ph.D. For those interested in a mainly taught masters degree with more emphasis on management skills and techniques and less emphasis on research methodology, see our executive programme (Work experience required)

The MSc Leadership Studies is ideal for anyone wishing to undertake research into leadership studies and its related disciplines. You will undertake a substantial research-based dissertation, and you will learn core research skills for the social sciences, their theoretical underpinnings, and data collection and analysis techniques. You will also learn the fundamental theoretical concepts of management and inter-discipliniary studies of leadership.

In addition to developing the research skills needed to successfully undertake doctoral studies, you will be introduced to the research methodologies and philosophical approaches in the field of leadership studies. On completion of the programme you will be aware of the main historical precursors to leadershp thinking, and appreciate some of the enduring qualities of leaders and leadership. You have a good foundation in the key theories of leadership studies, and be able to challenge the traditional conceptions of leadership. You will also have learned about the philosoophical and ethical frameworks to a range of leadership issues.
