About English and Film Studies, BA - at University of Exeter
The Combined Honours programme in English and Film brings together all the advantages of studying within one of the country’s top rated research departments with the dedicated provision of film. This degree provides a firm foundation in the study of literature and film and gives opportunities to work between literary and visual cultural texts. Our film modules aim to develop your familiarity with a historically and nationally diverse range of films and to equip you with the critical tools to analyse them thoughtfully and in depth. Modules are taught by staff with research strengths in film from the turn of the nineteenth century to the present day, with particular expertise in early and silent international cinema and British and US cinema. Our recent research activities have covered topics as diverse as genre, gothic heroines, stage illusions and special effects, early cinema, tie-ins and marketing, the Hollywood left, American quality television, media constructions of Seattle, and Hollywood comedy.
The BA in English and Film moves from an initial foundation year towards greater choice and a higher degree of specialisation in the latter years. This structure ensures that all students have some common experience and gain similar expertise at the outset, before focusing on areas of individual interest.
As well as drawing upon the diverse research strengths and expertise of staff working in fields from medieval literature to contemporary television, the English and Film programme is able to exploit film research resources that are unique to the University of Exeter through the holdings of The Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture. The Centre is a vital and unique resource for British film scholarship, and is openly accessible for all Exeter students.
