About Translation, MA - at University of Exeter

This programme is ideal if you have degree-level knowledge or equivalent of a foreign language and would like to enter a career in professional translation, multilingual language technology, or develop your intercultural and interlinguistic skills. With pathways available in Professional and Specialist Translation, Literary Translation and Research in Translation Studies, it is vocationally and practically orientated, with the research pathway providing excellent preparation for PhD-level studies. The core focus is on translation methodology and general translation skills, so you can develop the profile necessary to enter the translation profession, no matter which pathway you follow. An important part of the programme is the dissertation which can also take the form of a practical translation project. You may take a combination of two foreign languages, or opt for translation both into and out of the foreign language, if you are suitably qualified.

Students for this programme are eligible to apply for AHRC grants under the ‘Professional Preparation Master’s Scheme’ for Literary and Professional and Specialist Translation pathways, and the Research Preparation Master’s Scheme for the Research pathway.

Entry requirements
A good Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in one of the languages of the programme: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Russian (subject to demand). Native speakers of these languages are welcome to apply and should normally have a degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in English. Applicants with other qualifications and experience are welcome to apply and will be considered on their merits.
