About Russian and Arabic, BA, BSc - at University of Exeter

Studying Russian at Exeter gives you a fascinating opportunity to learn about a centuries-old culture which has had an enormous influence on our own view of the world, as well as the culture of present-day Russia under Medvedev and Putin. You’ll be able to experience some of the great works of literature and art such as Crime and Punishment, and Eugene Onegin, and some of the lesser-known exciting novels, pictures and poems that make up so much of Russian cultural life. You’ll also learn a language spoken by over 288 million people as their first language alone: Russian currently ranks fifth in the number of speakers world-wide and is one of the six official languages of the UN.

We are dedicated to providing an outstanding learning experience for our students, delivered by research experts as well as native-speaker lectors. We tailor our programme to meet the different needs of beginners and non-beginners, to provide them with excellent Russian language skills as well as a deep knowledge of important cultural subjects.

The Russian department is a vibrant and exciting place to study. You’ll work within a supportive study environment which stimulates enjoyment of the language and independent study. We aim to provide you with challenging intellectual training as well as the personal and key skills that are essential for the world of work. We also provide the skills and expertise for those who wish to pursue further research. Your year abroad enables you to gain greater competence in the Russian language, to further your knowledge of Russian culture and society, and to develop your capacity for independent learning.

We have a strong research culture in the department and our staff research interests feed directly into your undergraduate degree programme. This means that you have access to the latest knowledge and ideas and will be taught by experts in their fields.

Our students have gone on to pursue exciting careers in government agencies, businesses in Russia, the diplomatic service, and the charities sector, as well as education, journalism, and translation/interpreting.
