About European Law, LLM - at University of Exeter

This programme was one of the first of its kind in Europe and now has an established international reputation. Following the various Treaty amendments and rounds of accessions, the European Union has given rise to a continuous burgeoning of legislative and judicial activity. Unprecedented challenges and opportunities are therefore available to lawyers, whether they intend working in private practice, commerce and industry, government legal service or the Union itself. The programme aims to develop the expertise for employment in any of the many areas for which those trained in EU law are in great demand, and is well-suited, for example, for those involved in law and policy in the 2004 round of accession (Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic, and Slovenia) and beyond (2007: Bulgaria and Romania; possibly Turkey).
Students of this programme are also strongly encouraged to take part in the yearly tour of various European institutions. The yearly Lasok Lecture by a prominent scholar or public figure (past speakers have included EU Commissioners, judges and MPs) ensures the Exeter academic community, including LLM students, stays in touch with international debate on the key question of European integration.

The method of teaching is by small seminar groups. Students are expected to prepare papers in advance on a given topic which they then present at the following seminar, under the guidance of the appropriate module supervisor.

Entry requirements Normally a reasonably good Law degree, and a sound understanding of the basic principles of public and private law. We are happy to consider students with qualifications or degrees other than in Law, eg Accountancy or Business Studies, if those qualifications
