Course Information

BEng Architectural Environment Engineering

The course involves the use of modern and environment friendly technologies to create comfortable and efficient indoor environments. Engineers in this field apply their skills to design energy efficient buildings incorporating renewable energy, green architecture, ventilation, lighting, acoustics and electrical/control systems.

This course aims to develop an understanding of the principles and techniques of architectural environment engineering science and the ability to apply these principles and methods for sustainable development of the built environment.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)

Our alumnus named among 'inspirational' Chinese people worldwide

Jiayi Qiu, who studied Architectural Environment Engineering and graduated in 2014, has been named among 11 Chinese people who are inspiring the world in fields as diverse as sinology, science, dance and charity, by Phoenix TV, a Hong Kong-based TV network.

Jiayi was given his award in recognition of being the first student from outside the UK or Ireland to be recognised by a President's Award from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

How will I study?

As a student at one of the leading research universities in the field of green technologies in China, you will be exposed to the latest developments in your chosen field. You will explore the use of sustainable materials and building services systems driven by non-fossil-fuel based technologies with a view to contributing to the construction of economically viable, environmentally friendly buildings during your career.

In your later years of study, you will focus on building analysis, advanced environmental design and environmental performance modelling. You will be given the opportunity to apply your knowledge and hone your analytical abilities through research projects. You will consider in more detail the holistic design of a building, its internal environment and the systems necessary for environmentally responsible building construction.

The Architectural Engineering course at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China has become the first in Eastern China to be accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). Accreditation is the mark of assurance that the BEng degree programme meets the high standards set by the engineering profession and the UK industry regulator, the Engineering Council. It also means that other countries that are signatories to international accords will recognise the UNNC qualification as substantially equivalent to those running in their jurisdiction.

The accredited degree is the first step towards professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng); giving UNNC graduates a competitive advantage with many employers. In the rest of China, only one university in the west has gained the same accreditation.

Career prospects and employability

Most graduates continue into professional training, but a number enter research. The course in Architectural Environment Engineering is taught by staff from the Centre for Sustainable Technologies and the School of the Built Environment, University of Nottingham.

By the time you graduate, you will have a sound knowledge of architectural environmental engineering and the building services of environmentally friendly buildings, including the design of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, acoustics and lighting. You will be equipped to take a central role in the development of strategies for sustainability and to advise on improvements to the energy and sustainability performance of buildings
