This programme is dedicated to healthcare professionals who specialise in diabetes. It aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to provide high quality care for your patients.

The flexible, modular structure allows you to study over a period suited to your own professional needs and circumstances.

Taught by experts in diabetes from Warwick Medical School, this is an interactive programme where you will learn through seminars, group work and individual study.

Course structure

WMS Masters programmes are designed to provide a flexible education pathway to suit individual requirements and to take account of professional commitments.

You can take the programme in one year, as a full-time student, or on a part-time basis over a period of two to five years. Based on modular learning, it gives you the opportunity to progress from Certificate to Diploma to a full Masters degree.

  • Certificate stage: Understanding Research and Critical Appraisal in Healthcare (UReCA) plus two optional modules
  • Diploma stage: UReCA plus five optional modules
  • Masters stage: We offer two alternative routes to the MSc:
    • Professional Project path: UReCA plus six optional modules plusProfessional Project
    • Dissertation path: UReCA plus four optional modules plus one optional research module plus Dissertation

Each module can also be taken as a stand-alone Postgraduate Award.

Core module:

  • UReCA: Understanding Research and Critical Appraisal in Healthcare(available onsite or via Distance Learning)
Optional modules:
  • Applied Pharmacology and Therapeutics in Diabetes Care
  • Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) Therapy: Principles and Practice
  • Diabetes in Pregnancy
  • Type 1 Diabetes in Children
  • Psycho-social Management of Children and Young People with Diabetes
  • Management of Diabetes in Adolescence
  • Other Forms of Diabetes (from Obesity to Genetics)
Research modules:

Please note: These are only applicable if you choose the Dissertation path.

  • Epidemiology and Statistics
  • Mixed Methods for Health Research
  • Design, Analysis and Interpretation of Epidemiological Research
  • Qualitative Research Methods in Health
Entry requirementsFirst degree or equivalent and current registration as a healthcare professional alongside two years’ post-registration experience in Diabetics. Applicants without a degree maybe admitted to a Postgraduate Award, and could potentially progress to an MSc upon successful completion of the Award.Teaching methods

This is an interactive programme. You will learn through lectures and seminars, practical group work and guided reading. You will benefit from guided discussions and have the opportunity to practice the skills you have learnt during the sessions.

Modules are organised in blocks of intensive study lasting either four or five days at a time.

Assessment

Assessment for each module varies between written essays of 4,000 words each, or an essay and a case study totalling 4,000 words.

For the MSc, the Professional Project is assessed by a project report of 8,000 – 10,000 words; the dissertation is 15,000-20,000 words.
