Course summary

Overview
The BMus in Music Performance and Music Management degree course offers you a great range of options with around half the course based on performance with the other half split across:

  • songwriting and arrangement
  • the music industry
  • management and promotion.

Allowing you to concentrate on areas of study and focus you are most passionate about. You will also have the option to study live sound, music education or experimental sound.

There are a wide variety of performance opportunities, and we actively encourage collaboration with other artists and musicians, forming bands and ensembles, putting on showcases and shows and taking part in recording and production sessions both as musicians and as producers.

This course will enable you to develop:

  • as a musician, with one-to-one tuition and workshop sessions
  • writing, composition and arranging, using state of the art facilities stagecraft and performance skills
  • understanding of the music business and entertainment industry
  • band leadership / musical directorship
  • understanding of marketing, PR and promotion
  • entrepreneurial skills.

Throughout the course you will have a personal tutor who will act as the first point of contact for advice, support or any issues which may affect your studies. We also understand how important your views are and we recruit student representatives from all levels. We invite them to regular meetings to voice students' opinions and discuss important issues or concerns to help us improve and deliver excellent teaching.

Career and study progression

Upon successful completion of the course you will have developed essential skills in: performance and stagecraft music business entrepreneurship songwriting and arrangement musical directorship management PR and promotion music video production.

Past students have gone on to:

sign as recording artists to record labels license and release their own material

  • work in recording studios
  • work as session musicians in the West End
  • work on tours or cruise ships
  • teach in schools and colleges
  • work for promotors
  • work for record labels and music management companies.

You may wish to undertake postgraduate study in your subject or even explore something new.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies.   • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 112-128 UCAS tariff points (or equivalent) normally in a minimum of two subject areas including Music or a related subject area
  • GCSE English and Maths (grade A*-C) or Level 2 equivalent.

We require a minimum of grade 6 performance on your first instrument or voice; preferably grade 5/6 sight reading, and preferably grade 5 Music Theory, but we will audition you if you believe you meet the required standard but have no formal qualifications. Our auditions are informal and include a relaxed interview.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
