This exciting course is a response to the needs of the current music industry. It is aimed at the musician who wants to develop their own performance and writing skills, technical knowledge to support the recording of music, and the industry 'know-how' to launch a career.

You will have the option to study live sound, music education or experimental sound. You will gain experience in: performing across a range of genres, and in a variety of live settings (including venues across London); taking part in work-based activities facilitated by our own commercial productions company (W5 Productions); running recording and production sessions; writing and arranging for bands and ensembles; and being a musical director.


This course will enable you to develop:

  • as a musician, with one-to-one tuition and workshop sessions
  • writing, composition and arranging, using state of the art facilities
  • stagecraft and performance skills
  • recording, mixing and production techniques
  • band leadership / musical directorship
  • understanding of marketing, PR and promotion.

Funding

Help with funding is available to a range of students, whether you are studying full or part-time, in your home country or overseas.

You may be eligible for a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees or a maintenance loan to support you during your studies.   • Full Time Undergraduate Bursary: a £3,000 award for new undergraduate students.
  • Path to Success Scholarship: a £4,000 award for students on a four-year degree course with a foundation year.

Please note fees are paid for each year of study unless otherwise stated. You will be required to re-enrol and pay fees at the beginning of each academic year. Fees may be subject to government regulations on fee increases. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

72 UCAS tariff points at Level 3, which would normally include at least two subject areas including Music or Performance or an alternative relevant subject area plus GCSE English and Maths (A*-C).

We require a minimum of grade 5 performance on your first instrument or voice. If you believe you meet the required standard but have no formal qualifications we may invite you for an audition. Our auditions are informal and include a relaxed interview.

Entry level Music Theory and Sight-Reading will be taught as part of the course, but if you have experience in these areas please let us know so we can take this into account when we start teaching you.

You must also show experience with music technology. Unless you have been studying on a recognised music technology course, we will ask you to provide a portfolio consisting of two or three tracks, together with a detailed report on how they were recorded, and your involvement in the process. International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).
